“I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.” ~ Philippians 3:10-11 ~ I came across this picture of the inside of an old car the other day. I like the way it looks, so I am now using it as my banner on Facebook. However, it’s not for the reason you’re probably thinking. Even though I admire the look and craftsmanship of that car, it reminds me that I am glad I don’t have to drive a car like that every day! This picture reminds me that things change — and that can be a good thing. One of the really neat aspects of things changing is discovery. When you get something new, you always discover new and different things it will do compared to the old. A new car, for instance, will be able to do things the car in the picture would never be able to do. Who was looking at a “Back-Up Camera” in the rear-view mirror of that old car — or on the information video screen on the dash? I don’t know if it even had a rear-view mirror. What about “Self-Parking” or “Self-Driving”? Not that old car! Technology changes — for good or bad — it changes, and that drives the changes in things. However, it’s not just stuff that changes. It’s everything — including us! In this passage in Philippians 3:10-11, we find the apostle Paul stating his determination to change — to change to be like Christ. Not that Jesus should change His character — His essence — His holiness — to be like Paul — but that Paul should desire to change to be like Him. We actually have a word for that — it’s “sanctification” — the process of a Christian changing to be made holy, as God is holy. On the other hand, there is one, and only one, “unchangeable” in the universe — and that is God. He never changes. Scripture tells us… “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” ~ Hebrews 13:8 ~
When Paul says he wants to know Christ — to know the power of His resurrection — he is not saying there has been a change in Jesus. He is saying there still needs to be a change in Paul. So, when we say we are going to be on A Forty Day Journey of KNOWING JESUS — we are not saying that somehow the Jesus we knew has changed on us. We are saying that there is still so much more about Him — about His nature — about His holiness — about His love for us — that we have yet to discover. And in that process of discovery, we will change. The Holy Spirit will continue the work of sanctification in our lives. Our desire should be that we will change to be more like Jesus! This Sunday morning, we will begin that journey. For seven Sundays — and forty days in between — we will be in discover mode. We will be challenged to know Jesus — to know His heart — to know His desire for an intimate relationship with each of us — in ways we have never experienced. My prayer is that each one of us will change — beginning with me! I hope you will join me in the journey. Sunday morning you will be given a 40-Day Devotional I have written to assist you on that journey. Each day you will find devotional thoughts and questions that will build on my sermon from the previous Sunday. For those of you not in the area of Prescott Valley who wish to join in the journey, you will be able to watch the sermon on Monday of each week and read the devotional online on the front page of our website: www.firstsoutherpv.org. — or you can request a PDF book to be emailed to you. I’m looking forward to a life-changing experience with Jesus. You can too! Blessings on your week as you begin your own Journey of Knowing Jesus. Pastor Terrell P.S. Know what else changes? How we give tithes and offering. Aren’t you glad we don’t have to bring lambs, goat, calves, doves, vegetables and spices each week for our offerings? The stuff of what we offer has changed — but as technology changes, the how we give can also change. Sunday, April 30th, we will begin to roll-out “online giving.” This is not really new technology, just new to us. You don’t have to worry if you are not technology savvy — we’ll pass the offering plates each week — and your cash or checks will still work just fine!
