“In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.’ Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.’ ‘How will this be,’ Mary asked the angel, ‘since I am a virgin?’

The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.’” ~ Luke 1:26-37 ~ It can’t be done! — Not now, not ever! — No Way! — That’s Impossible! The definition of “improbable” is: unlikely to be true or to occur. The definition of “impossible” is: incapable of being or of occurring.

On May 6, 1954, despite the popular opinion that this feat was impossible British runner, Roger Bannister, was the first person documented to run a sub-four minute mile. Turns out that it was only improbable that anyone would break the four minute mile mark. Today, high school students routinely accomplish that feat. There have been countless feats that were considered impossible to us mere mortals that are now done every day. We fly in airplanes without thought. People climb the Matterhorn. Men have walked on the moon, and on and on it goes. God has placed within man the desire and ability to subdue our world. That was His design for us. However, there are things that go beyond our ability to subdue. There are things that only God can do. When He does them we are amazed, because He has done not just that which is improbable, but that which is impossible for us.

A virgin, teenage girl in Nazareth, who will conceive a child by the Holy Spirit. No way that can happen — unless God does it! Jesus raising people from the dead — feeding 5,000 men along with the women and children with them, with only 2 fishes and 5 loafs of bread. It can’t happen — unless God does it! The Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, going to the cross, becoming our sin, dying there, paying the full price for our sin with His blood, buried, resurrected to eternal life on the third day, forever the King of kings and Lord of lords. Impossible — unless God does it!

A man, woman, teenager, child — destroyed by sin, broken physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually — reborn, made brand new, given a new spirit, the spirit of Christ alive in them, alive now for eternity — It can’t be done — unless God does it! When those things happen, do you know what we call them? We call them miracles. Unfortunately, most of the world today chooses not to believe in miracles. The outcome of that unbelief results in hopelessness — and hopelessness is another part of the definition of impossible. The New Testament addresses this issue two ways. First the angel said to Mary that nothing is impossible with God. About 34 years later, Jesus said that all things are possible with God! Jesus was born by a miraculous act. Jesus was a miracle worker throughout His public ministry. We really have no idea of the number of miracles He performed. He was resurrected from the grave by a miraculous act of God. He ascended into Heaven in front of many eye witnesses. Is it really any wonder that today He is still in the miracle working business? This Sunday morning, as we continue into the fifth week of our FORTY DAY JOURNEY of KNOWING JESUS, we will be looking at Jesus — Miracle Worker. If you are feeling hopeless today, I really hope to see you there. If you don’t have a copy of my KNOWING JESUS Devotional, you can still request one by emailing us at fsbcpv@firstsouthernpv.org, or you can read it online on the front page of our website at www.firstsouthernpv.org. Blessings on your week as you continue your own journey of Knowing Jesus — come to worship expecting miracles to happen and then watch for the miraculous to continue to happen all this coming week. Pastor Terrell

Please contact me to be a part of this adventure!

Sincerely in Christ, Pastor Frank

The apostle Paul told the church at Corinth that “whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men.” There are really three parts to this admonition. The first part is the what: “whatever you do.” There is not one special category of activities to perform enthusiastically while the rest of the activities of life can be handled in a lesser manner. Paul directs this admonition toward slaves, who he has already told to do the right thing whether being watched or not, and then follows with how they are to do the right thing. I say “they”, but I really mean “we” as Paul’s charge to slaves could easily be for all of us. The second part of the admonition is the how: “enthusiastically. In other translations this idea is expressed with the word “wholeheartedly.” Doing something with all of your heart conveys the idea of putting everything you have into the effort, but enthusiastically goes even further than that, although the meaning is hidden in the history of the word. Enthusiastic comes from a Greek word meaning “filled with God”, so when we do something enthusiastically we are going beyond “everything we’ve got” and tapping into the power that only God can provide. The third part of the admonition is the who: “for the Lord.” While we may be doing “whatever” for men, we are to do it enthusiastically as if we were doing it directly for God. Imagine how careful we would be if we were doing the dishes for the Lord, or cleaning His carpet or mowing His yard. That’s how Paul says that we should be doing things. When I started with this verse I was looking to apply it to Sunday morning worship, but it quickly took me on a ride to other parts of my life. I’ll let you decide how it applies in your life while I steer my thoughts back to how it applies to worship. Each of us has a part in worship, and whatever that part is, we are to do it enthusiastically, as unto the Lord. For some of us, that part is playing an instrument or leading in singing. For others it is joining in with the singing and allowing the Holy Spirit to speak through the combination of words and music. For still others it may be actively listening to all of the above. For all of us it includes participating in some way in the various aspects of worship that unfold during our time together: singing, praying, teaching and giving among others. In each of these we are to seek to do whatever our part is with the power of God in us as if we were performing that action for God. We serve a great and mighty God who deserves no less.

Thank you all church family for your wonderful donations to the youth yard sale! It was a great success, and we sold lots of great items. We were able to make $518.25 to send students to camp! Thank you again for your donations of not only things but cash as well. Please continue to pray for our students and adults as we prepare to explore what God has for each of us next month. Parents of those attending camp, there will be a parents meeting on June 4th at 4:30 in the cabin to get you all your paperwork and to answer any questions you may have concerning our trip to Glorieta. After camp, we will have a time to say thank you to our wonderful church family that has supported us all in our endeavors to attend camp again. We want only to share what God did for us during our time at camp and to say thanks for your support. We could not do it without all of your support both financially and prayerfully.
