“… anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” ~ Matthew 10:38 ~ “Follow me.” Those words of Jesus seem so simple, don’t they? Or do they? I’ve been thinking this past week of some of the many names and titles I have been known by during my life. The list gets pretty long. For example, I am officially Terrell Eugene Eldreth. However, in my immediate family I’m known as husband, father, daddy, dad, Papa, and several others. In my extended family, I’m known as Terrell, son, brother, brother-in-law, Uncle Terrell and cousin. Work titles have included paper-boy, busboy, dishwasher, puppeteer, fabricator, supply room worker, grocery checker and gas station attendant. In schools I was Teacher and Mr. Eldreth, and I’m sure several names that students use when teachers are not around to hear them. Then there are ministry related titles: Pastor, Reverend, Pastor Eldreth, Pastor Terrell, Pastor T, Youth Pastor, Chaplain Eldreth, Chaps, Padre, and several more. In my Christian life I am Christian, believer, brother-in-Christ, co-laborer, and several others. I could go on, but you more than get the picture, because most of you have the same kind of lists that you can make about your life and titles. One name that no one else other than Jesus can give me is the one that I strive for. It is the name that will ultimately define the success of my life. The name “Christ follower”. That is the name that I hope Jesus knows me as. It is the name to which all Christians are called. Jesus called people to follow Him throughout His public ministry. He called His disciples. He called people who were on the fence about who He was. He challenged people to go and sell all they had and then come follow Him. Jesus called people to take up their cross and follow Him. “… If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” ~ Luke 9:23 ~

As Matthew 10:38 states, cross bearing is a requisite for being a Christ follower. So we come to that word: “follow”. What does that really mean. The word used in these two verses in the Greek language mean that following Jesus is cleaving to Him in believing trust and obedience. Those cleaving to Him must also follow His leading and act according to His example. Other times a slightly different Greek word is used for “follow”. It is the word “mimeomai”. Maybe you see our modern day word “mime” in that root? A mime studies the actions of another person and then does what they do.

Follow — mimeomai — means to study the life of someone so as to fully understand and replicate his attributes in one’s own life. That is the life to which we are called. A Forty Day Journey: KNOWING JESUS. How can we be a follower without knowing Jesus? It just could not happen. I realize that a mere forty days is hardly enough time to really know Jesus. But it is a beginning. For the many who have joined me on this journey, may God continue to bless you with understanding of His Son. If you have yet to begin, why not start today? Why study the life of Jesus? Simply because without knowing His life — His heart — His compassion, we cannot follow Him in our lives. We cannot be who He has called us to be — Christ followers! This Sunday we begin our final week of the journey. We begin week seven with the reality that HE IS HERE! Jesus has not left us or forsaken us. Come Sunday to discover how we still encounter Jesus on a daily basis, 2000 years after He ascended to the Father in heaven. My desire is to be known ultimately as a “Christ follower”. I want my life to reflect His life. I want my heart to reflect His heart. I want my compassion to reflect His compassion — and I want that for each of you! It is a life-long journey to achieve — and only Jesus will bestow the title. Let’s do all we can to put our lives in a position to receive that title. Blessings on your week as you continue your own journey of Knowing Jesus — may you move closer to being known as one who reflects the life of Jesus every day. Pastor Terrell P.S. The Sunday is Pentecost Sunday — the day set aside to remember the fact that the Holy Spirit now resides in every Christian. (That might give you a little advance notice of one of the ways we encounter Jesus every day!) We will be sitting at the Lord’s Supper Table as well on Sunday morning. Hope to see you there.
