“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” ~ Acts 1:8 ~ A week ago, Barbara and I, along with several thousand other Southern Baptists from across the country, had the opportunity to be a part of our Annual Convention. Formally known as SBC 2017, we met at the Convention Center in downtown Phoenix. Like every annual convention we have, all we do is covered and scrutinized by the news media. Many of you have read news articles or heard stories about this convention, so I wanted to share some thoughts. In preparing to do so this week, I came upon a fellow Arizona Southern Baptist Pastor’s thoughts, and I obtained permission to share them with you here. So, from Brian LeStourgeon, Pastor of Hillside Baptist Church in Phoenix we read the following: “I got to live “fake news” this week. It was surreal, actually participating in a process and watching it falsely reported, with editorials, public statements, and social media reactions that had nothing, really, to do with what was happening in the convention hall. Here is a good rule of thumb: if you read anything about the SBC, it is probably inaccurate, so don’t get worked up about it until whatever can be verified. No, we did not refuse to condemn racism. We had some procedural issues to work through and those were reported midstream as the final product. Remember, the SBC is a two-day business meeting. Nothing is completed until the final gavel. Americans are increasingly ignorant about parliamentary law and rules of order; this seems particularly so in the media. If the AP were reporting on my previous sentence, the headline would breathlessly declare, “Pastor Brian Says Americans are Ignorant!” We can all see how misleading it is to focus on the first part of a sentence taken out of context and report it as the whole of a thought. A professor of mine likes to say, “A half-truth presented as the whole-truth is an untruth.” I call it lying, and that is exactly what the AP and others did this week part-way through a deliberative process. There are many people, both in the secular and Christian world, who owe Southern Baptists an apology this week.

We also did not vote to condemn the sitting president, Donald Trump. We did not vote to subjugate women. We did not vote to kill gay people. We did not vote to destroy America. All of these ‘I’ll use the SBC to advance my own political views’ stories are false. Fake news from both the Left and the Right, both secular and religious. Like I said, it was weird. But I also experienced Real News this week. News like 1 in 5 SBC churches self-identifies as “ethnic,” making us the most racially diverse Protestant denomination in North America. News like the ERLC’s assistance to churches who are unlawfully discriminated against by the city governments they are trying to serve. News like a WMU (Women’s Missionary Union) work training program that has helped 40,000 women find new jobs.

News like the International Mission Board’s balanced budget that enables us — for the first time in many years — to send more missionaries this year than the last. News like record-breaking enrollment in our six seminaries, making the SBC the largest theological education force in the world. News like a 4,900 to 1 vote declaring unambiguously that racism in all its forms is contrary to the gospel. News like messengers from local congregations all over North America coming together in unity to promote the Good News of Salvation in Jesus Christ all over the world. There was a lot of underreported Real News this week, and it was good. I am not ashamed or embarrassed to be a Southern Baptist. To the contrary, I am proud to wear the label and to share with anyone and everyone the life-changing power of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ the Lord. Thank you, Almighty Father, for the churches of the Southern Baptist Convention.” Blessings on your week as you pray for our world-wide work as Southern Baptists. Pastor Terrell P.S. Don’t forget, one week from Sunday — July 2nd — is our third annual Red, White and Blue Jeans Sunday. In addition to our worship, we will celebrate together our nations birthday at 12 noon. After all, what is more patriotic that Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet? — and will be giving away two of those three things in the Fellowship Hall!

We would like to thank the many people who made VBS a success this year. Beginning with the fulfillment of the “Wall of Needs”, the amazing backdrop and animals, the time spent making snowballs for the ultimate fight, to the labor of love cutting out paper trees, each effort was not only done in love, but for the children we serve. Each team member was an integral part of the success that we experienced. The hours, sweat and devotion made our trip to the arctic an amazing learning experience. Thank you for sharing your time and experience with us. Sara Hudson and Jean Knapic Co-directors
