“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance.” ~ Psalm 33:12 ~ Two hundred forty-one years. Now that’s a big number for a birthday! Aren’t you glad that we get to live in the greatest country on earth? I know I am. There are so many good things about America — things that we take for granted most of the time. For example, most of us take safety for granted — that is, until it is threatened. This past week has been just such a time. The Goodwin Fire started last weekend, and escalated very quickly. As I write this on Thursday night, the fire has now reached over 24,000 acres. We learned this evening that it is now 47% contained. That number was 1% just over 24 hours earlier. We saw complete communities evacuated. Several of our members were forced to leave their homes by the approaching flames. By God’s grace, all will be back in their homes by tomorrow evening if all continues as it did today. Many more of our members — including Barbara and myself — found themselves in the limbo land of a “pre-evacuation” status. I had never even heard that term before last Monday at 11 p.m., when our next door neighbor called to give us the good news! Though I didn’t know all of the details — I knew it didn’t feel safe. However, in all of this, we have been witnessing God’s mighty hand of protection on our community. We have also seen an example of some of what makes America great. We have seen sacrifice on the part of strangers. We have seen caring for others. We have seen volunteers from here and from several other states, putting their lives in harm’s way to save human lives, homes, property and beloved pets and livestock. Many of us take having meals to eat every day for granted here in America — at least until they may be taken away. Leaving your home with very little notice —maybe sleeping in a high school gym — can leave you wondering just where your next meal will be coming from.

Fortunately for most of us, that is seldom if ever, our issue. For some here in our community, it has been an issue — for at least part of this week. We have seen relief agencies stepping up, including our own Arizona Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers showing up with their trailers. Beginning tomorrow they will be feeding anyone needing hot meals, and serving many of the over 1,100 fire fighters working to contain the fire. Thank you to all who have given this past week. You are a part of the greatness of America — and a shining example of the awesome greatness and love of Christ. Our needs this week are temporary. We are confident that life will get back to normal for most of us within a matter of days. But for many not as blessed as we are to live in the United States, those safety issues are normal life. Sub-Sahara nations in Africa are living desperate lives in the midst of the worst drought of the past 100 years. Children like Mohapi have no parents and are left to fend for themselves or die. Part of our VBS Offering went this week to help feed children just like this teenage boy and his sister. In the midst of our worst week — we realize that we are still called on to serve others. You have once again risen to the challenge, and God receives glory. Lives on the other side of our world will be changed for eternity, and the angels in heaven rejoice. We live in a great county, but what makes us truly good is that we — along with so many other fellow believers — choose to make God the Lord of our lives. Blessings on your week as you continue to watch out for your friends and neighbors. Find at least one more person to whom you can show Christ’s love to this coming week — even as things seem to get back to normal for most of us. Pastor Terrell P.S. Don’t forget, this Sunday — July 2nd — is our third annual Red, White and Blue Jeans Sunday. We will be Celebrating Freedom as we worship together, including time at the Lord’s Supper Table. In addition to our worship, we will celebrate together our nations birthday at 12 noon. After all, what is more patriotic that Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet? — and we will be giving away two of those three things in the Fellowship Hall!
