I have always been fascinated with statistics. Not the really complicated kind that involve all sorts of strange symbols that only math majors can understand, but the really accessible ones like how many times an NFL quarterback has thrown for over five thousand yards in a season or how many hamburgers McDonald’s has sold by now. For those of you wondering, only five quarterbacks have ever thrown for more than five thousand yards in a season, and only Drew Brees has done it more than once, having done it five times. On the other hand, nobody knows how many burgers McDonald’s has sold. They stopped counting in 1994 when the total was 99 billion, and estimates vary as to how many they may have sold by now. That same fascination leads me on occasion to look up a particular word or phrase in the Bible and see how many times it is used and in what contexts. The other day I decided to look up “Worship” in the NIV and see what I could find out. The word “Worship” occurs 153 times in the Bible. The first occurrence is Genesis 22:5 and the last occurrence is Revelation 22:9. It occurs 109 times in the Old Testament and 44 times in the New Testament. It occurs 36 times in the Pentateuch, which is roughly one third of the times it occurs in the Old Testament. In the Pentateuch it occurs once in Genesis, 20 times in Exodus and 15 times in Deuteronomy. In Genesis 22:5 Moses told his servants to wait while he went with Isaac to worship the Lord. Only Moses knew what the cost of that worship was supposed to be, so imagine his joy when the Lord provided the sacrifice. In Exodus 3:12 the Lord tells Moses that after the Israelites have been freed that they will worship God on the mountain. Between Exodus 4:23 and Exodus 12:31 it occurs thirteen times in the context of Moses speaking to Pharaoh about freeing the Israelites so that they may go worship God. From Exodus 20:5 to Deuteronomy 31:20 it occurs an additional 20 times. Most of the time it occurs, God is telling the Israelites either not to worship other gods or informing them that in the future they will turn to other gods in order to worship them. In only four of those 20 times does the word “Worship” refer to worshipping God, and each time God is either telling them how to worship Him or how not to worship Him. As I read through all of these occurrences of the word “Worship” I saw presented the difficulties of worship. Moses had to be willing to truly sacrifice. An entire nation of people needed to be set free. Once free to worship, this entire nation of people was
going to have a lot of trouble staying focused on just Who it was they were worshiping. I see echoes of those same things when we come together to worship. In order to truly worship God I have to be willing to give up what I want and trust God for what He wants. I have to allow Him to set me free from the entanglements of this world, and I have to realize that staying focused on worshipping God is not going to be an easy task. Jesus distilled it all down to a couple of verses. In John 4:23-24 He said “yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” We have a helper in the Holy Spirit who can empower us to focus on God as we worship and help us to receive the truth of God’s word. A Bible full of people that struggled to get it right proves that worship isn’t easy, but Jesus’ love for us demonstrates that He is worthy of all of our efforts. Let’s worship Him!
