“For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water.” ~ 1 Peter 3:18-20 ~ After all those years of archeologists looking for it somewhere in the Middle East — it turns out it was in Kentucky all along. Noah’s ark is resting quite nicely on a hilltop in Kentucky, even as you read this! And you know… finding it wasn’t all that difficult. Just follow the signs on the highways, park in the big parking lot, pay for your $40 ticket, get on the bus and you are delivered right to this spot from where I took this picture two weeks ago — at the Ark Encounter! Seriously — built to exact scale — this ark is really impressive! It stands seven stories tall at its highest point on the bow. You cannot begin to discover everything there is to see in half a day. I’m using a really big picture this week because this is a really big boat! Genesis tells us that it took Noah 120 years to build the ark. During that time of building, he also preached — but no one was listening! Only eight people were on the ark when God closed the doors. However, God was patiently waiting for people to respond to His message all of those years. They could have responded in faith — as Noah and his family did — and been saved from the flood. Sounds a bit like today.
This passage in 1 Peter is one that has stumped Biblical scholars for centuries. It is one of those “Bible Mysteries” that after our best effort to figure what some Bible verses mean, we have to sit back and say, “We’re not sure. We’ve got some ideas, but we’re not certain which is right. We just don’t know.” Yet certain truths about these mysteries can help us today: 1. God’s character is love, not malice or deceit. Whatever is happening here, God is reaching out to lost creatures, for whom he cares deeply. 2. God speaks. While we puzzle over what, where, and how this happens, we can see that God is not focused on himself in some odd meditational stupor. God communicates. 3. God triumphs. Christ victoriously preached to the spirits, indicating his power, control, and transcendence over all spiritual beings and authorities. 4. God saves us. That’s his business. We need it and God does it. God exerts himself to rescue the needy.
Bible mysteries tell us this much, and sometimes that’s enough. * Here I am with my grandson, Mason. We are on the inside of the ark at its doors. Notice how big and wide they are. God had Noah build an ark with doors wide enough to receive massive numbers of people. They just choose not to come. It may be that today as you are reading this, you realize that you have scoffed at the invitation of Christ to new life. After all, how could — and why would — the Son of God die for any of us? The righteous for the unrighteous. It just does not make any sense. There must be some rational explanation other than God sending His Only Son to die in our place. Of course, the people of Noah’s day thought there must be some rational explanation for a giant ark in Noah’s backyard — something other than God would send a flood to destroy the world! Blessings on your week as you respond in faith to God’s calling on your life — even if you face some ridicule or persecution — for doing so… and if you haven’t yet responded to Christ’s invitation to new life, do that today! July has been a great month, a time to celebrate the freedoms that our men and women have fought so hard for. This month our students invited another youth group to join us in hiking the Flagstaff Lava Tubes. We made good friends, had a great time and learned about how important it is to be a light in our dark world. As we get ready to begin a new school year our Biblical interest will be on evangelizing to our friends. Our students will learn effective ways to share their faith. Please continue to pray for our student ministry as we apply God’s word to our lives. Thank you and God Bless, Pastor Don
