Yep. It’s official. I really like this time of year! There is just something about the new year that floats my boat — and this new year is no different. Ok, I know that colds and flu are around, but that’s about normal for this time of year — whatever that means. But with the beautiful snow fall on New Year’s Eve, I believe this is a great time of year! I love the fact that everyone is ready to get things going again. Seems like the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas take so much out of us. Most of the time, we end Christmas day exhausted. But then comes that little break between Christmas and New Years day when we can finally rest a little and begin the new year actually looking forward with anticipation. The new year really does offer a new beginning in so many ways. I am convinced that God really loves “new beginnings”. Have you noticed that He never offers us leftovers? None of us would appreciate a steady diet of leftover meals — the same leftovers meal after meal — day after day — month after month. We would very quickly be crying out for something new to eat! In the same way, God knows that He has created us to crave and appreciate “new” in our lives. Look at what the scripture promises us: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” ~ Lamentations 3:22-23 ~ The new. God’s great love. God’s compassions that He bestows on. They are not recycled. They are not leftovers from last year — and not even from yesterday. They are new today! They are the “new” we need for right now in our lives. What a great God we have! Continued on page 2

Not only does Jesus renew our lives daily, He also brings the “new” we need into the life of His church as well. So many “new” things await us in 2019 that I can hardly sit still! New challenges and adventures in ministry. Some launching even this month. Next week I plan to write my blog on “Looking Back at 2018” and even more importantly, “Looking Forward to 2019”. However, for now, let me fill you in on little of “new” coming up in Bible Study and worship this week here at FSBCPV. This Sunday morning, January 6th, I will be sharing from the book of Revelation on “New Year/New You”. We will discover how 2019 can be The Best Year Ever. On this Sunday evening we are beginning a “new/last” section of the book of Matthew. We will spend several weeks going through chapters 26-28 looking at “Worship the King.” This series concludes our study of the book of Matthew by following the footsteps of Jesus through the final days of his ministry on earth — his betrayal, his death, his resurrection — gaining insight into how we can be fully devoted disciples of the Risen Lord. We begin this weekend with “Loving Jesus”. Wednesday evening Bible Study will continue our study I’ve called “I Love the Word.” We’re looking at 52 verses that I believe every Christian should be familiar with. If you are not working in AWANA, this is for you! I will be filling you in on a lot more — including new information on the Children’s building and Generations and Generations Church — next week. Be watching for it to come. In the meantime, going back to the most important “new” that I don’t want you to miss as we begin this new year. Jesus promises to make one thing new, that once changed, never goes back to the old. Jesus promises to make “YOU” brand new — today — right now. He will give you a brand new, eternal life. Not a leftover, recycled, whitewashed, has been, rehabbed life. He will make you brand spanking new from the inside out. If you have not chosen to allow Jesus to do that for you, you can right now, wherever you are. By faith, just acknowledge that He is the Son of God who died on the cross for your sins and then rose again from the dead three days later to give you eternal life, and then commit your life to Him. You will never be sorry you made that decision! Blessings on your week as you look for and experience the “new” that Jesus has for you right now. He really does change everything! Hello everyone and Happy New Year! Today was my first day back at work after taking some days off during Christmas break. While I was going through a mountain of emails, I got a call from the registrar at the high school who needed some help running reports. While we were working on her reports I could hear the radio playing in her office. Off and on I would notice what was playing, and I thought to myself that while I recognized the tunes, if there was a message there I couldn’t tell what it was. I imagine that if I could have paid more attention to the songs, I could have figured it out. Since the station was playing popular songs from the 60’s and 70’s there is a good chance that the songs were about love, losing at love, drinking, smoking or potentially all of the above. Beginning on Christmas day Christina and I drove well over 2000 miles, much of it in nasty weather. We saw quite a few accidents, and parked a number of times for varying durations on I-40 waiting for traffic to move. During one of those delightful breaks from making any progress in our travels I got to observe the couple in the car behind us. The wife was yelling at her husband about the situation we were all in, and as far as I could tell using some choice vocabulary to do so. I’m certain that he had no choice but to listen to her, but he didn’t move a muscle or act as if he had heard a word. She definitely had a message for him, and whether he looked like it or not, no doubt he understood. When not driving or attempting to drive I watched a number of football games and mostly tried to not watch the commercials, except for a few funny ones that I like. Every commercial has a message, and a number of them have an additional, almost subliminal message in an attempt to encourage viewers to DEACONS OF THE WEEK conform to, or at least accept some kind of behavior or activity as good or normal. I try to keep a mental catalog of those companies that are promoting non-Christian IF YOU NEED HELP OR ASSISTANCE values in their commercials so that I can avoid them whenever possible. Deacon Team of the Week: Now back to my first paragraph about music and message. The music we Paul Marshall: 928-999-2109 sing at church has the only message that matters. Sometimes a song carries a piece Karl Holloway: 928-772-3374 of the message, and sometimes a song has the entire gospel, but any song we sing will have a readily identifiable message about the Truth we proclaim. In a world full of messages that oppose the gospel, having songs in our heart that reinforce the one true message is as important as it has ever been. I encourage you to follow the ORDER OF WORSHIP admonition in Ephesians 5:19 to speak “to one another with psalms, hymns, and JANUARY 6, 2019 songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.” The world marches to the beat of a different drummer; let’s keep praising our loving Shepherd!
