“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” ~ 2 Corinthians 5:17 ~ Yep. It’s official. I really like this time of year! There is just something about the new year that makes it my favorite time of the year — and this new year is no different. Ok, I know that the first week was just a little rocky for many of us. It’s pandemic time — whatever that means. I don’t know exactly, but I’m pretty sure it means that a whole bunch of Arizona has some sort of flu, pneumonia, cold — or just feels yucky. The good news, many of us are feeling much better now. It’s fun to go out doors again. This is a great time of year! I love the fact that everyone is ready to get things going again. Seems like the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas take so much out of us. Most of the time, we end Christmas day exhausted. But then comes that little break between Christmas and New Years day when we can finally rest a little and begin the new year actually looking forward with anticipation. The new year really does offer a new beginning in so many ways. I am convinced that God really loves “new beginnings”. Have you noticed that He never offers us leftovers? None of us would appreciate a steady diet of leftover meals — the same leftovers meal after meal — day after day — month after month. We would very quickly be crying out for something new to eat! In the same way, God knows that He has created us to crave and appreciate “new” in our lives. Look at what the scripture promises us: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” ~ Lamentations 3:22-23 ~ The new. God’s great love. God’s compassions that He bestows on us. They are not recycled. They are not leftovers from last year — and not even from yesterday. They are new today! They are the “new” we need for right now in our lives. What a great God we have!
Not only does Jesus renew our lives daily, He also brings the “new” we need into the life of His church as well. So many “new” things await us in 2018 that I can hardly sit still! New challenges and adventures in ministry. We have a new office staff — the Diana’s — Diana Lindsey, our Treasurer and Diana Austin, our new Secretary — are doing a great job settling in and working well together. You will be blessed if you stop by to say hi! David Ard will be ordained as our newest deacon on Sunday, January 14th in our morning worship. This will be a very special time of worship and celebration. For now, let me fill you in on a little of the “new” coming up in Bible Study and worship this week here at FSBCPV. This Sunday morning, January 7th, we will celebrate together at the Lord’s Table for a Communion service — “A Supper of Symbols” We will discover how two symbols can and will impact our lives and even our world in 2018. On the other hand, some of the old will become new this month. For example, on Sunday evening we are getting back to a section of the book of Matthew after a month long vacation of sorts. We will be spending several weeks going through chapters 16-17, continuing to look at “The Great Adventure.” This weekend the question is: “Who Do You Listen to?” in Matthew 16:1-12. Wednesday evening Bible Study will have an old/new emphasis as well. We will be back this Wednesday in our study of the book of James that we are call “Work Your Faith.” We are going through this challenging book verse by verse. If you are not working in AWANA, this is for you! The Connections Seminar, our new member and potential Members Seminar, will meet in four sessions each Sunday morning this month. We will meet in the Worship Center at 9:00 a.m. during the Sunday School hour, beginning this Sunday morning. If you have not yet attended, just show up this Sunday! The Children’s building and Generations — will be back on our agenda as well this winter. Be watching. In the meantime, one more “new” I don’t want you to miss as we begin this new year. Jesus promises to make one thing new, that once changed, never goes back to the old. Jesus promises to make “YOU” brand new — today — right now. He will give you a brand new, eternal life. Not a leftover, recycled, whitewashed, has been, rehabbed life. He will make you brand spanking new from the inside out. If you have not chosen to allow Jesus to do that for you, you can right now, wherever you are. By faith, just acknowledge that He is the Son of God who died on the cross for your sins and then rose again from the dead three days later to give you eternal life, and then commit your life to Him. You will never be sorry you made that decision! Blessings on your week as you look for and experience the “new” that Jesus has for you right now. He really does change everything!

As we look forward to this year’s Deacon Ordination of David Ard, let us reflect on the work of a Deacon according to scripture and FSBCPV’s Constitution. “As New Testament officers of the church, the deacons are responsible before and to the membership for the spiritual affairs of the church (By-laws Article 2:C) , in accordance with the meaning of the work and the practice in the New Testament, deacons are to be servants of the church. Their task is to serve with the Pastor and staff in performing the pastoral ministry of the church (By– laws Article 2:C:5). The office of the deacon was established early in the church for the purpose of benevolence and service as we can see in Acts 6:1-3. 6 Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food. 2 So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.
