“Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed — in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’ ‘Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” ~ 1 Corinthians 15:51-55 ~ As I write today, we are officially one week into Fall 2017. Have I ever mentioned to you that Fall is my favorite season of the year? Daylight is getting shorter and nighttime seems to be getting longer. The temperature is getting cooler each day, especially in the evenings. Spring and Summer plants in our garden and flower beds are beginning to die out — or at least are producing less now. The leaves on the trees are changing colors, and many are already losing their leaves. Yep, it’s Fall alright — everything outside seems to be changing — and I love it. Oh, wait a minute. It’s Fall, things are changing, and now I have to deal with the changes. I like longer days and shorter nights. I like warmer temperatures and not having to wear jackets every day. I like my garden and flowers. I do enjoy the change in colors outside, but I don’t enjoy the dead leaves on my patio that have to be picked up regularly — and that will just get much worse for the next couple of months. My allergies are kicking in big time. Maybe I’m not so keen on Fall after all! What’s so great about change anyway? Obviously, God created our world to go through the changes of seasons — for a purpose. Not because He is mad at us — but because He knows what we need. Without the changes of seasons, the crops we need to survive would not, and could not, be produced. The earth needs to regenerate itself for the next growing season. I do enjoy getting to eat, so that is a good thing. Many animals have regular birthing seasons, and that also leads the balance of the food chain. That too is a good thing. It seems wise Solomon was correct. There will always be change, and those times, dictated by God, are for our good. And if they are part of God’s purpose, could it be that we too are created for change?

We are able to adjust to the seasonal changes of the year. Beyond that, our very lives change regularly. As much as we love babies, no one wants to remain an infant forever — and we certainly want our children to grow at a normal, expected rate. I met a young girl at Awana last Wednesday evening. She told me her name and then told me she was going to be 7 years old — not that she is now 6 years old — but that she was changing soon. She sees another birthday as a good thing! Change happens in life — in our physical lives — our emotional lives — our spiritual lives — our family lives — our work lives — our social lives — and even in our church lives. Sometimes we are looking forward to the changes. Some changes we might prefer to avoid. However, avoidance is seldom possible. All of us are at some point of change in each of those areas. We age, we move, we deal with health issues, we attend graduations, we marry off our kids. It’s life — and life changes for all of us. We are also at one of those times of change in our church life right now. For the first time in several years, we have decided that we desire to worship — at least for a season — together as one body. It is hard to know everyone in our church family if we never even meet or worship with them. So, beginning this weekend, we are going to start worshipping together in one worship service. As you can see from other announcements in this newsletter, everyone will be in Bible Study (Sunday School) at 9:00 a.m. After that, we will all be in worship together at 10:30 a.m. I know that this is change, but please remember, change can, and will, produce some great benefits. God created us to be able to change. We can trust Him that He has some great things is store in this next season of First Southern’s life. I invite you to join with me and our church family in embracing this change. Don’t forget, we all — who know Christ as our Lord and Savior — have one final change to look forward to. The day will come for each of us when are changed in the twinkling of an eye. Our bodies will be changed to be like Christ. Our place of residence will change to our new permanent address in heaven. That is change worth looking forward to. That is worth embracing. That change will not be for just a season — it will be for eternity. If you don’t have that hope, I invite you to give me a call or talk to me this Sunday. I would love to share the hope of eternal change with you — the reality of eternal life in Jesus Christ. Blessings on your week as you embrace some new changes! Pastor Terrell P.S. One other change worth noting this week is the change in most of our public elementary schools here in the quad-city area. Schools are allowing churches to come on campus with Good News Clubs. We are involved at Granville Elementary. We are reaching 30+ children each Tuesday afternoon, with almost 50 enrolled. We need your help, but you must be trained. The next training will take place this coming Saturday, October 7th. See the announcement in this newsletter.
