with Pastor Terrell “… Do not fear, Zion; do not let your hands hang limp. The Lord your God is with you. The Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but rejoice over you with singing.” ~ Zephaniah 3:16-17 ~

Saturday, March 4, 1933, with the nation in the grip of the Great Depression, the new president’s inaugural speech was awaited with great anticipation. Broadcast nationwide on several radio networks, the speech was heard by tens of millions of Americans, and set the stage for Roosevelt’s urgent efforts to respond to the crisis of the day. His speech is best remembered for one of his first lines in which he stated:

PASTORAL STAFF

“So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is... fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” I’m not so much concerned for the reasons behind FDR’s inaugural speech that year. History tells us much on the subject. However, I do notice that even then, the “paralysis of fear” was very much a reality in everyday life. It was grinding our nation to a halt. If fear can paralyze a nation, what do you think it does to your life? Think of all of the opportunities for engaging the world around you that are missed. All of the relationships that are derailed or maybe never developed. Jobs and ministries that are dropped or never even attempted. Time alone with the Savior for fear of disappointment or guilt. Countless opportunities for engaging with God, with our world, with our families, with our own selves — all lost due to fear. We cower in fear like Zion — with our hands limp at our sides — and we don’t have to. God has a better plan for us.

Friends, we let fear win where it never should. We fear just about everything we can possible think of. We fear dancing, speaking in public, almost anything new, relationships, growth, spiders — ok, spiders may be legitimate — sickness and disease, terrorism, war, finances, death and taxes — you get the idea. If someone can think of it, someone else will find a reason to fear it. And ultimately, it will paralyze. However, God does have a better plan for us. Go to the library this week and do some study on being brave. Go on the internet and find clever videos on how to psyche yourself up when afraid — you might even find that video where some crazy guy gets a monster spider off the wall of his house in his bare hand. I gotta tell you, it didn’t inspire me to go out spider catching! All culture can do with the “paralysis of fear” reality is to tell you to “buck up” and “try harder not to give in to the fear.” Yet, God has a much better plan. God’s plan is not for us to live in fear. That seems like a great end-game, but how do we get there? God’s plan is not that we go out looking for the latest and greatest fear busting remedy trending on Facebook or YouTube. In fact, God’s plan is not that we go out at all. Rather, His plan is that He comes in. “The Lord your God is with you.” What a life-changing fact! And He is a “Mighty Warrior.” We don’t have to go searching, Jesus comes abiding — and fighting. He conquerors our fear. He has already won the battle. He does not come to rebuke or blame. He does not come to desert when the going gets tough. He comes to save you in the very face of the terror. Jesus is your “Mighty Warrior” when it comes to fear and doubt — but He is also your “Delighted Musician” when it comes to His love — and HE LOVES YOU! Can you wrap your mind around that? The God of universe delights in you! The very thought of you causes Him to break out singing with joy! So, dear friends, if you are fed up with fear and terror… “which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance,” then pay attention to the singing. Jesus is here. He is here now. Your “Mighty Warrior” — your “Delighted Musician” — is in your every circumstance. He knows your every need. He faces your every fear. He fights for you today — and He is singing His delight — His joy — His love to you. Christian, you are the delight of your Savior’s heart. When you experience His presence, you are released from the “paralysis of fear” and your hands are freed to engage once again.
