“Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” ~ 1 Peter 2:12 ~ The Christian Science Monitor reported in February 2006 that perceptions of the US had changed significantly in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation. In 2003 a poll conducted by the Terror Free Tomorrow organization reported that 48% of the people had a “very unfavorable” view of the US, and only 15% had a favorable view. Two years later those numbers had flip-flopped: Only 13% had a very unfavorable view and 44% had a favorable view. What made the difference? When the tsunami struck Indonesia in December 2004, tens of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid poured into the country, much of it from US sources, and thousands of relief workers came to help, many of them American Christians. Indonesia is predominately Muslim with small pockets where Christianity is alive and well on this island nation. Indonesia is in the news again over the past few days. You may have heard or read that they were hit with a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and tsunami last Saturday. The wave of water that hit was almost unimaginable in size with 20-foot waves of water engulfing Palu, a coastal city of about 330,000 people. An estimated 66,000 homes were destroyed leaving nearly 200,000 people urgently needing assistance. I read this morning that at least 1,571 people have died in this disaster, including at 34 children who were attending a Christian Church camp. How do we live today is such a good way that even Muslims in Indonesia may see our good deeds and turn to worship and glorify Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord?

Continued from page 1 Beyond prayer, the most obvious way to help is through our giving. Baptist Global Response, our Southern Baptist relief organization, wrote this earlier this week: “Baptist Global Response is joining local partners in the Indonesian island of Sulawesi in response to a devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami. The death toll is currently above 1,200 and more than 66,000 homes, roads, and bridges have been destroyed. The initial response will focus on providing food, water, and other immediate needs, including transitional shelter. Following the initial response, BGR and its partners will conduct assessments to determine the next steps for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), food security and nutrition, along with housing and shelter solutions. The needs are significant and further complicated by a major volcanic eruption in the region, the impact of which is yet to be determined.”

I like music. Not every kind of music at every time, but I like music. I like to listen to music and I like to play music on a couple of different instruments. Singing is ok, too. One of the things that I never liked to do is practice by myself, though. I would much rather practice with a group of people; that’s why I enjoy rehearsals much more than sitting in a room by myself somewhere learning some music. I don’t know how David felt about being out by himself tending sheep. Maybe he really liked it; maybe he didn’t . I do know that he thought praising the Lord together was a really good idea, though. In Psalm 68 verses three and four he says “may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful. Sing to God, sing in praise of His name, extol Him who rides on the clouds; rejoice before Him—His name is the Lord.” He tells us to do six things together: be glad, rejoice, be happy, be joyful, sing and extol. He likes “rejoice” so much he says it twice. Each of those things is good by yourself, but they are even better together. I know that when we get together in choir sing we have a really good time, and I imagine that most if not all of the choir members would tell you that they would rather sing their parts with other people rather than at home alone.
