“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so…” ~ Psalm 107:1-2a (ESV) ~ As I write today (Thursday), I am keenly aware that Thanksgiving Day is just one week away. Did you know that 91% of Americans will have turkey for Dinner? And so — I was thinking about Butterball Turkeys for some reason — though I know not why. Did you know Butterball has an online help page? For three decades, the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line has answered the desperate pleas of hundreds of thousands of holiday cooks. As you can imagine, in that time the staff of 50-plus experts has heard some pretty outlandish tales of Turkey Day mishaps and fielded some truly bewildering questions.

Well I went to that computer page and I found some of the problems that people have with cooking turkeys. You may be flabbergasted at what I found. Following are just a few of the favorite conversations from the Butterball hotline operators. A woman in her seventies, cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the very first time, called for help because her mother said it was time she learned how to prepare the Thanksgiving meal.

A proud gentleman called to tell the staff how he wrapped his turkey in a towel, laid it in the floor and stomped on it breaking the bones so it would fit in his pan. Another gentleman called to tell the operator he cut his turkey in half with a chain saw and wanted to know if the oil from the chain would adversely affect the turkey.

Continued from page 1 One mom called in and told the Help Line operator about how her little girl had asked if they could slow -roast the turkey for three or four days because she liked how it made the house smell. The experts at the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line told her that the turkey should only stay in the oven for a few hours and that it wasn’t a good idea to leave it cooking four days! After discovering a turkey from 1969 in his dad’s freezer, a man called the Talk-Line at Butterball to ask about the best way to cook the 30+ year-old bird. Although the Talk-Line staffer recommended the open roasting pan method to cook most turkeys, but this time she suggested that the first step was to purchase a fresher fowl!
When a Talk-Line staffer asked a caller: “What state is your turkey in” (meaning how thawed was it) the caller responded with, “Florida.” All that being said, we know that Thanksgiving is not all about the Turkey Dinner. It is really about giving thanks to God for His providential blessings. The good news here is that we don’t need a 1-800 hotline to call about that. What we do have is God’s blessings, which are poured out daily in our lives — and we have His Word — the Bible — directing us in what we are to do. If you take the time to look it up, you will see that the vast majority of the time the Bible instructs us to give thanks to the Lord — we are told the same thing. We find it in Psalm 107:1. Give thanks because God is good. How many times do we somehow forget that truth each year? Things don’t seem to be going our way. Life gets tough. Life gets sad. We get mad. You know how that goes. And what goes away is a thankful heart — we somehow decide that God may be good, but maybe just not right now! Nothings could be further from the truth. God is always 100% consistent in all of His attributes. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. That’s why the statement to thank God because of His goodness is followed immediately by the statement: “for His steadfast love endures forever.” I am thankful for that truth every day. For all the times I may forget — or even doubt God’s goodness — He still pours out unconditional love into my life. That friends is reason enough to Give Thanks this Thanksgiving Day!
Blessings on your week as you consider those and other reasons to give thanks this Thanksgiving week. I am looking forward to seeing you in worship this Sunday. Pastor Terrell P. S. If you need help this holiday season with your bird, don’t forget to call 1-800-BUTTERBALL
