“And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” ~ Luke 2:10-11 (ESV) ~ Many of you know that Barbara and I have three children. We are extremely proud of them. Right now, our middle child, Courtney, is the midst of a battle with Breast Cancer. This past Monday, as she was undergoing her seventh round of chemotherapy, she wrote the following on her Facebook page. Since many of you have been praying for her, I wanted you to hear from her directly…

Isaiah 40:31 “but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Without Jesus I wouldn’t have made it this far without growing weary... and my journey is far from over. I’m not the most eloquent writer in the world. I have some friends and my sister who could put feelings into words so much better than I could. But I wanted to take a minute and explain why I chose joy. Especially why I chose joy during this Christmas season! Continued on page 2

Cancer is not easy. It’s hard!!! It’s hard on me emotionally and physically. It’s hard on my family. It’s hard on my friends. Cancer just doesn’t seem fair. It brings so many emotions to the surface. At first fear, some anger and lots of tears. But do you know what has been the sweetest thing to emerge from my cancer diagnosis? Joy. Joy in the Lord. Hope. Hope in the Lord. Peace that passes all understanding. Jesus has literally held my hand. He has held me in the palm of His hand through this. He has cried with me. Laughed with me. Helped me lie down and sleep without worry at night. Here’s the thing that I’ve been thinking about a lot this Christmas season. My joy, my hope, didn’t start when the doctors said you have cancer. My joy, my hope, began one night long ago in a lowly manger when Jesus, the Christ child, was born. My joy, my hope, was fulfilled when Jesus, who knew no sin, was crucified and buried and rose again on the 3rd day as payment for my sin. My joy, my hope, became my personal story when I asked Jesus to come into my heart as a young 5-year-old girl. My joy, my hope, has been growing ever since. My mom and I talk about how none of this has surprised God. He wasn’t surprised that I have the BRCA2 gene. He isn’t surprised that I have cancer. Is he sad? Yes. But he doesn’t say “Oops… I didn’t realize that was going to happen to you”. There is such peace and joy in knowing The Lord has gone before me. He’s already walked this road. I’m not facing uncertainty... I’m facing Christ!! He doesn’t expect me to go through this alone. Over the years he has prepared me through his Word for this battle. So, because of that I chose joy. How could I not??? No matter what my life might bring... I have eternity in heaven with Jesus. Do you? If you don’t know the answer to that question... if you don’t have joy or hope in Christ... please send me a message. Trust me there is nothing sweeter this Christmas season! Thank you for your prayers!!! Merry Christmas!! I chose Joy!! Blessings on your week as you discover the joy of Christmas in your life in new and exciting ways — beginning with the joy of salvation.
