“Be strong, and let your heart be courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord.” ~ Psalm 31:24 (CSB) ~ Years ago, during a Monday night football game, one of the announcers observed that Walter Payton, the great running back for the Chicago Bears, had accumulated more than nine miles in career rushing yardage — a phenomenal feat. The other announcer underscored the accomplishment by noting: “And that’s with someone knocking him down every 4.6 yards!” That’s right, Walter Payton’s average carry of the football was less than five yards. Payton’s brilliance was not in long sprinting runs from goal line to goal line. Rather, it was in his ability to keep getting up each time he was tackled, and to keep running again and again and again.

We all experience failure and we all make mistakes. We give up, give in, say the wrong things, and fall short of who we’re striving to be. But in those moments God always stands ready to help in time of need — always willing to forgive. God always stands ready with the offer of restoration!
Monday—Friday
This Sunday morning, we will be in the middle of my sermon series: STORM READY. This week in Storm Warning, we will discover three facts about the storms of life that we all must face — and we know that face them we will.

Don’t give up. Don’t decide it’s not worth it, because it is. Each time you get up, you will find that you are a little stronger, a little more resilient, a little more able to press forward with courage.
SUNDAY: 8:30 A.M. Directory Pictures in the Foyer 9:00 A.M.
If you’ve been hit and hit hard, you may need a little time to catch your breath. But then, get up and choose to move forward. Press on, even if it means taking just one small step. If there are lessons to be learned, learn them. If you need to grieve a loss, do so. If you need to make amends, make them. If you need to get a fresh perspective or to set new priorities, sit down and reestablish what is truly important. And in the process — ask the Lord to heal your heart.

ORDER OF WORSHIP MARCH 11, 2018
As we approach Easter I am always reminded of the cross, and of one of Jesus’ last statements: “My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?” As a youth I never could fully make sense of that statement. I understood that Jesus had taken the sin of the world upon himself so that we might be free, but I felt like something was missing from my understanding. It wasn’ t until it was pointed out to me that this was the first line of Psalm 22 that the missing piece fell into place. The book of Psalms was the hymnbook of Israel, and at that time there were no verse or chapter numbers. When a psalm was to be sung, it was called out by name the same way we might call out “Amazing Grace.” And just as the name “Amazing Grace” probably instantly calls to our minds “how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me…” the name “My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?” would call to mind subsequent lyrics, especially to the Jewish leaders who were gathered around the cross watching the Man they had condemned die a painful death. In this moment Jesus chose to refer to a song that the Jewish leaders would have committed to memory; a song that spoke about the situation he was in as clearly as if it had been written on the spot. The leaders could not fail to recall lyrics like “they have pierced my hands and my feet” and “they cast lots for my garments.” It is amazing to me that at this pivotal moment in all of human history God chose to use the lyrics of a song he inspired David to write hundreds of years before to convict the hearts of those who were crucifying His Son. God continues today to use music to inspire, awe, sooth and convict us. Sometimes we are looking with expectation for the message, and sometimes it surprises us, but when God chooses to speak to us, we will hear. The only question is “what will we do once we’ve heard”? Some of those gathered at the cross hardened their hearts to the message, but others could not fail to take notice and respond. Pastor Scott
