How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” ~ Psalm 119:103-105 ~ There’s an old preacher story — I think I may have told it once as a sermon illustration — about a recent graduate from the local seminary who was being interviewed by the Board of Ordained ministry. He was asked, “What part of the Bible do you like best?” He answered, “I like the New Testament.” The board asked, “What book of the New Testament?” “Well,” said the young minister, “I think it’s the Book of Parables.” One of the elders then said, “Will you kindly relate one of those parables to this board?” This young graduate knew he was up against it, but he also knew it was possible that the members of the board knew less about the Bible than he did, so he proceeded as follows... “Once upon a time a man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and he fell among thieves and the thorns grew up and choked the man and he went on and he didn’t have any money and then he met the queen of Sheba and she gave that man a thousand talents of gold and silver and a hundred changes of raiment’s and when he was driving along under a tree his hair got caught in a limb and left him hanging there. He hung there many days and many nights and the ravens brought him food to eat and water to drink and one night when he was hanging there asleep, his wife, Delilah, came along and cut his hair off and he dropped and fell on stony ground and it began to rain and it rained forty days and forty nights and he hid himself in a cave and the man went out into the highways and byways and compelled them all to come in. “Then he went up to Jerusalem and he saw Queen Jezebel sitting high up in a window and when she saw him she laughed at him, so he said, ‘Throw her down out of there,’ and they threw her down. He said, ‘Throw her down again,’ and they threw her down again. And he said, ‘Throw her down again,’ and they threw her down seventy time seven and the fragments they picked up were twelve basketfuls. “Now, I ask you, whose wife will she be on the day of judgment?” Continued on page 2

There was not one person on the Board of Ordained Ministry who felt qualified to question the candidate further, so he was passed.

This week July 29 — AUGUST 4 SUNDAY: 9:00 a.m. Sunday School (Babies - Adults) 10:30 a.m. Worship (Kidz 4 Christ; K-4th)

Hopefully, that story never really took place. We want our pastors and missionaries to be better versed in Biblical theology and knowledge. At the same time, I want all of us to have a firm working knowledge of the Bible. In order to help that process of discipleship in all of our lives, I am going to make the next year in Wednesday Night Bible Study about the Bible. Specifically, we will look at one verse each evening. We will look specifically at the impact that verse can have on our daily lives. I invite you to join us in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00 P.M. for “I the WORD 52 Verses Believers Should Know.” It all begins this week on August 1st. Blessings on your week as you read and apply the Word to your daily life and I hope to see you this Sunday when we look at some of the Undue Influences in our lives and what to do about them. “Women’s Ministry Update” Recently, the women’s ministry leadership team met for a morning of prayer and planning. How exciting to bring our precious church and especially our women’s ministry before our great and glorious God to ask His leadership for our upcoming season of ministry. We spent a rich time in the book of Nehemiah, finding inspiration from Nehemiah’s passionate faith-walk with God, and from his courage and determination in stepping through the open doors God provided. (I can’t wait to do a Bible study on the book of Nehemiah together with you, probably in the Winter session!) Through our prayer and discussion, God laid on our hearts the following Mission Statement for our women’s ministry:

“The FSBCPV Women’s Ministry sees it our mission “to introduce women to Jesus and to help them grow to be more Christ-like as we reflect His care and compassion.” Our theme verse is Nehemiah 8:10b, “This day is holy to the Lord. Do not sorrow (or grieve) for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” There are so many exciting and uplifting ways that we desire to carry out this mission: Come to our Fall Fete – Saturday, August 25, a salad potluck where we will reveal upcoming plans and invite your ideas for events and outreach. Sign up in the foyer now! Our ever-popular Fall Craft Fair – November 2-3 Powerful prayer walks around the campus, covering our campus with the power and presence of God. Sponsoring a parenting seminar for people in the community, with follow-up Bible studies for any interested participants. Short topical seminars on issues important to women of varying ages. Other ideas?? You have so much to offer to and to gain from our women’s ministry. Come on August 25 and check it out! Worshipping and serving our Great God together with you, Maggie Smith, Women’s Ministry Director
