with Pastor Terrell

“… ‘You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins... Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem’…. They replied, ‘Let us start rebuilding.’ So they began this good work.” ~ Nehemiah 2:17-18 ~

Not to say that any of you were around to hear the first recording of it — but I’m sure many of you reading this today will know at least the melody and some of the chorus to an old, old song — In the Good Old Summertime — which was written in 1902! The first verse begins: There’s a time in each year That we always hold dear, Good old summer time; With the birds and the trees-es, And sweet-scented breezes, Good old summer time, When your day’s work is over Then you are in clover, And life is one beautiful rhyme, No trouble annoying, Each one is enjoying, The good old summer time. That song comes to mind because we are already at the end of August. Growing up, that always meant to me that the last days of summer were quickly coming to an end. In my ministry career, it has been the slowest month of the year — activity wise — at church. August has always been that part of the year when previously passed-over projects and sermon preparation can get extra attention. That is, until this year. August has been a whirlwind of activity here at First Southern. We have not been strolling though the trees-es and lying in the fields of clover around here — in fact, I don’t think there are any fields of clover in Arizona — even if we had the time to lay down in them.

The work on that building has us all excited around here. The work got started four days ago — after much moving of stuff. Everything in the building had to be moved out for the work inside of the building to take place. We are addressing all of the known issues with the building — asbestos is now all removed — extra bracing where needed in the attic — enhanced entrance and fixing the flooding issue once and for all — all new exterior facia and rain gutters. In addition to that, several walls have been removed creating a very large main hall and the nursery is getting a small make-over. Some awesome paint along with all new lighting and electronics for the inside — followed by some work on the playground will make it a building kids and parents will be happy to use. Although not cheap, it is certainly within reason for the amount of work that must take place. Once completed, this building will serve the families of our church and community for several decades to come. I am challenging you to step up and give if you are able. We are committed not to borrow any money, so work will continue as we have the funds to pay for it. We should complete about two-thirds of the work within a couple of weeks. If the funds for the other third come in, we will be able to open the building sometime in late September or early October. Our final cost should come in between $45,000 and $50,000. You can give on Sundays by using one of our regular envelopes in the pews — just be sure to mark the envelope for the Children’s Building. As always, you can also give on-line. Blessings on your week as you join us in prayer for kids and young families that will be reached because of a Family Life Pastor and our renovated Children’s Building — and I hope to see you this Sunday morning as we continue our sermon series on GRACE which I am calling: DISCOVER a brand new YOU. This Sunday: “Why It’s Called Amazing Grace.” Pastor Terrell P.S. Not to be too old fashioned, but it is still August — so I’m heading home now to be with my Tootsie Wootsie in the Good Old Summertime!
