“But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.” ~ Exodus 17:12-13 (ESV) ~ It was a life-or-death battle. Joshua, the up-and-coming next leader of the Israelites went out to meet the army of the Amalekites in the valley of Rephidim. Moses and the Israelites needed to pass through this region on their way to the promised land — and the Amalekites didn’t want them to. So, Moses sent Joshua and a part of the army of Israel out to meet the Amalekites one morning.
What about Moses? Wasn’t he supposed to go out to battle as well? Turns out he did engage in the battle, just not in a “traditional army” kind of way. While the army went out to engage the enemy, Moses went up on the mountain overlooking the battlefield below. Why? It seems to intercede for the Israelites as they fought.

What did this intercession look like? Moses lifted his arms and hands to the heavens. Though were not told directly, I don’t find it a huge leap to believe Moses was praying the whole time.

Intercession does not come without cost to the intercessor. Intercession is hard work! Here we see two men well up into their 80’s climbing up a mountain — I’m not sure of Hur’s age. Then Moses lifted his arms. I was a puppeteer for many years in High School and College — I have to tell you that keeping your arms raised — even for 30 minutes — is hard! And when Moses Continued on page 2

Many of you reading this are intercessors. You go daily to the Throne of God in prayer for our church and for others. You do the hard work of prayer. As the Army of God — as a team — as a family — we need you. And when you grow tired, don’t give up. The hard work is part of the battle. The Apostle Paul encouraged the Thessalonians:
10:30 a.m. Worship: Free At Last Series (Kidz 4 Christ; K-4th)
Never forget that of those prayer needs for which you intercede before God many times represent life-or-death issues. Maybe it is the salvation of a family member or friend. Maybe it is a family on the verge of coming apart. Maybe it is the life of an unborn baby about to be aborted. Maybe it is a young soldier in harm’s way on the others side of the world in a war zone.
“As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good.” ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13 (ESV) ~
When you find yourself bone-tired — ask for an Aaron or Hur to come along side of you in the task — and never forget that the battle always belongs to the Lord. 6:00 p.m. Evening Worship the journey into HOLINESS What Determines Your Future? Blessings on your week as you decide to join in the battle through intercessory prayer — and I hope to see you this Sunday morning when we look at The Power of Persistence. Pastor Terrell
with Pastor Scott During this quarter in Sunday School we have been studying 2 Samuel. Each week of the study there has been a different theme that the writer has focused on as we study the kingship of David, but as we read the passages each week an additional overarching theme has been apparent: God loves us no matter what. During the first part of his life David seemed to be the “golden boy”, and it was easy to see him as a man after God’s own heart. But then in the middle of the book all of the sudden things come crashing down, to the point that the prophet Nathan tells David in 2 Samuel 12:14- “But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the Lord, the son born to you will die.” “Utter contempt”. Not the words you would imagine would be used of the David that faced Goliath, but there they are. From that point in 2 Samuel to the end of David’s life we feel like the narrative has switched from an heroic tale to a soap opera, and we find ourselves asking questions like “why did God put this in the Bible” and “what on Earth was David thinking?” That brings me back to “God loves us no matter what.” When we look in the mirror and wonder how God can love us, God says “I love you no matter what. Just open my word and see what my children have done, and I still loved them, even though my heart was breaking.” When Jesus told the parable of the prodigal son, the father ran to meet the son that had broken his heart, all because he loved him so much. Certainly David still suffered the consequences of his sin, and ultimately the entire nation paid a price, but God never stopped loving him, just like God never stops loving us. Don’t take my word for it; just take a look at all of the imperfect people in the Bible that he loved. That’s something worth celebrating. It’s worth singing about, too! (See how I worked that in? Wink, wink!) Since I mentioned singing, I would love to bring to your attention two upcoming musical dates. The first date to circle on your calendar is Sunday, August 19th at 5:00. That is when our first choir rehearsal of the fall semester will be. In the fall semester our main focus is on preparing Christmas music, but we will also sing lots of other songs during the fall. I hope that those of you who were in choir last semester are getting excited to get back to singing, and I also look forward to the prospect of seeing some new faces. Anyone who loves to sing is welcome to join us. The other important date is August 26th during the evening service. We'll be having a music night, and anyone that would like to sing a song or play some music is invited to participate in our program that night . All you have to do is let me know what you want to sing or play and you'll be on the program!
