“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” ~ James 1:2-4 (ESV) ~ As I began writing this today — Wednesday — I became aware that today is national “Talk Like a Pirate Day.” I am always fascinated at the number of weird things that get their own day! So, in honor of this special day: What did the pirate say on his eightieth birthday? Answer: “Aye, Matey!” I know, it’s a lame joke. But I am reminded of pirates today.
PASTORAL STAFF
In James 1:2 we find James using a particular word. The word “trials” that he uses is the Greek word: “peirasmos” — from we which we also get our English word: “pirate.” I find it interesting that pirates and trials have a lot in common when we encounter them. For example…

1. Pirates don’t Announce their Arrival Ahead of Time Life would sure be easier if they would just make an appointment before they show up. But no, pirates and trials just arrive — most of the time, at the most inopportune moments. They show up when your schedule is already full — when your checking account is already depleted — when you are already feeling drained physically, emotionally or spiritually. Yet here they are at your doorstep. You just suddenly encounter them. James says you “meet” them. That Greek word means to encounter an unwelcome and unanticipated experience.

2. Pirates Attack Back to that word “pirate.” It means “attacker.” That definition alone seems to be the majority of their job description. I have never faced a trial that did not in some way attack me, my family or my church.

The Greek word for “various ways” that James uses is the same word that is used in the Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament to describe the multi-colored coat that young Joseph received from his parents. The attack can be stress. It can be depression. It can be fatigue. It can be a physical problem. It can be a relationship problem. It can be a financial problem. It can be a spiritual problem. It can be any number of issues that just show up uninvited. 4. Pirates Attack — in Various Ways — Usually at the Same Time Have you ever noticed that reality? Pirates and trials tend to come in bunches. Taken one-at-a-time, we might think we could handle them. But no, they come not singly, but in groups. It’s a problem at home — at work — at church — at the bank — with your health — many times, all at the same time. So, what are we to do when the pirates ring our doorbell? James say we are to “Count it all joy!” Maybe we should read those four words again. “Count it all joy!” How can we do that? We don’t feel happy when we face the pirates of our lives. Many times, we feel just the opposite. We feel depleted and beat-up. But joy is not about our outward circumstances. Joy is an inner experience that is based on our relationship with Jesus Christ. In fact, joy is the second Fruit of the Spirit that Paul mentions in Galatians 5:22. We can’t produce joy in our encounters with pirates — but Jesus can. Joy is Jesus living in us. So, James says to stand strong in your faith. When we do that in the midst of the trials, steadfastness is produced — and that steadfastness in our faith leads to our being perfect in Jesus — complete — lacking nothing. Blessings on your week as you consider what your response will be when a pirate rings your doorbell this week. And speaking of pirates, I will begin a new sermon series this Sunday morning that I am calling: BULLETPROOF. It’s about forging a faith as strong as steel. This week will be: “When Life is Unfair” — sounds kinda like a pirate attack. I hope to see you then. Pastor Terrell
