with Pastor Terrell
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” ~ Psalm 1:1-3 (ESV) ~
What sad a day for America. A few minutes ago, I was able to hear the last part of Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s opening remarks before the Senate Judiciary Committee. I don’t know if he did what he was accused of or not. Neither does anyone else other than he and his accuser. I hope it is not true, as I would hope that no one was ever raped or that anyone was ever unjustly accused of rape. Either way, someone life’s is wrecked. But what I have been thinking about for the past couple of weeks due to these events being in the news is character. My thinking turned to two well-known former NFL head coaches of resent years — Tony Dungy and Lovey Smith.

In 2007, much was made about the fact that both coaches taking their teams to the Super Bowl that year were African American.

This is, of course, significant; Tony Dungy and Lovey Smith broke the color barrier among coaches the same way Doug Williams broke the barrier among quarterbacks, paving the way for guys like Steve McNair, Vince Young, and others.

But an even greater story is the fact that both head coaches are committed Christians. This aspect hasn't been covered nearly enough.

Matthew 24:36-51 TUESDAY:
“Dungy and Smith are role models, not just for coaches who look like them or men who look like them, but for all coaches and all men. They live their lives the right way, and as a result they do their jobs the same way. Their priorities are, in order: faith, their families and football. The outcome of the Super Bowl or any game does not define them. They personify words such as class, grace, dignity, honor and integrity. We all can draw inspiration from men such as these... Dungy and Smith are family men. And they still win.” In a world that often assumes compromise is essential to success, it's good to see two outstanding examples of excellence and integrity. I'm reminded of the words of David... “He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” ~ Psalm 1:3 ~ Guys let me talk especially to you for a moment. Don’t buy into the lie that good guys finish last. Don’t believe the lie that doing the right thing is always like being a milk toast. It takes faith, guts and fortitude to always choose the part of righteousness. You need to take that path daily. Your family needs you take that path and our church needs you to take that path and or community needs you to take that path. It’s called the path of CHARACTER. Blessings on your week as you search out the pathways of character that stand before you this week. This Sunday morning, we will explore: BULLETPROOF. — Forging a Faith as Strong as Steel. What to do when life is: “All Shook Up.” Pastor Terrell
