“If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?” ~ Luke 9:23-25 (NIV) ~

CROSS BEARING BELIEVERS Is it just me, or are you also overwhelmed with the number of people and organizations that want you to follow them? Seems that everyone has an agenda these days that should by all accounts, make our lives better — or at the very least, easier somehow. Every politician running for office (and there are a lot of them right now!) claim to have the state secrets to success. Every vacuum cleaner company claims to have the unique invention to make sure Fido’s hair doesn't continue to live in every nook and cranny of your house — and I’m sure there is a reason we need 200 plus varieties of toothpaste to make our teeth pearly white! It’s all about convenience, ease, or financial benefit. Just vote right — purchase right — donate right — join right — support right — work right — think right — do right — and you will be — well — all right. So, who are you to follow? How many are you to follow? What are you supposed to do? It’s enough to give you a massive headache! What if we're asking the wrong questions? What if most people are looking for the wrong results? What if it isn’t about comfort and ease and prosperity at all? What if life is really about something very different? continued

Two-thousand years ago, Jesus challenged His disciples with the words: “Follow me.” Doesn’t sound all that different than today — until you look more closely. Jesus does not mention ease, comfort, or prosperity. He talks about denial of self — not promotion. Losing life — not gain. A cross — not comfort! What in the world is this stuff about following Jesus? Is it any wonder only a few ever choose to follow? And yet, daily, that is our call to discipleship in the Christian life. To deny ourselves — to put the needs of others in front of our own — to take up our cross — although it may not be what we think that cross really is. The cross of Jesus was not hardship. It was not a severe illness or pain. It was not “hard to get along with” relatives, neighbors, or co-workers. Everyone, unbelievers and Christians alike, have those.

The cross was redemptive. Jesus went to the cross because it was the only way we could find redemption from our sins. It was the cost of His blood. You and I cannot redeem ourselves on a cross — and we certainly cannot redeem anyone else. But we can die daily on that cross to what he world peddles as salvation! And we can and must be involved daily in redemptive ministry — challenging our world with the cross of Christ.

Schedule for the rest of the week: Tuesday @ 10:00 AM IMMERSE: Messiah Room #202; The 10 Women’s Bible Study Fellowship Hall Wednesday @ 6:30 PM Youth Group Fellowship Hall Thursday @ 6:00 PM Mid-Week Bible Study Fellowship Hall

Don’t get lost in the noise of this world. Take that long walk of discipleship every day. Take up your cross and follow Jesus! Blessings on you as you take up your cross and engage the world this week. I’m looking forward to seeing you this coming Sunday for In-Person or Online Worship. We are now back to First Corinthians and Good News for the Not-So-Good. This Sunday we will be looking at what the Bible says about Who You Really Are (spoiler alert: it may look somewhat like a life of crossbearing).

P.S. January is Sanctity of Life month and January 21st is Sanctity of Life Sunday. Life has been, is now, and always be, a target in our world. Satan makes sure of that. Afterall, he is not the lifegiver — he is the life-destroyer. Praise God, Jesus is the Life-Giver whom our world desperately needs. Why not take some time this month to discover how you may be able to help aid and protect the unborn and new-born lives in our community.

THE PRAYER ROOM There is a barrel in the Office Hallway for donations to the Yavapai Food Bank.

(Room #206)

Will you take the opportunity to pray? You are encouraged to pray on Sundays for Morning Worship. During the week, Prayer Room is open to you during church office hours.
