EMERITUS: adj [to serve out one’s term + to earn, deserve, serve] 1. Holding after retirement an honorary title corresponding to that held during active service. — (Webster’s Dictionary) It’s been almost nine years now that I have had the pleasure of being your Senior Pastor — and I do mean pleasure. There is so much to enjoy about serving here at First Southern. Getting to know each of you. Hearing your stories of how God has worked in your lives. Getting to share life with you. Barbara and I really appreciate that honor! Preaching and teaching each week to groups of people who are receptive to God’s Word and engaged. What pastor wouldn’t love that? Getting to work with an incredible staff. They truly make coming to work a joy! So many volunteers — in every area of ministry and service. Just living out what it means to be the church. But today, I want to talk for a minute about a special group of volunteers who give service to all of us here at FSBCPV — OUR DEACONS! I don’t know that I can commend them highly enough. I am constantly amazed at the love they demonstrate for the body of Christ and the community God has placed us in. Service is in their DNA. As I sit with them in their monthly meeting — service is the topic. How are they serving? How can they serve better? Are they missing anyone they should be serving right now? Those are the topics they spend time on. They minister to Barbara and I. They pray for us like no other group of deacons have ever done in our ministry before arriving here, and I pray it never ends! Most importantly, they serve all of us. I have officially given up trying to be the first one to the hospital when a member is sick or having surgery. They will always beat me. I seldom have to share the need of a member with them — it is usually the other way around. God has truly blessed our church with the five active deacons who presently serve this year and the two who are off rotation at this present time. That still leaves one man who has served and who is now in semi-retirement status as a deacon. continued

Altogether Gene has served 34 years in Deacon Ministry. That is an incredible amount of service. After his active career in the Air Force, he spent an even longer career as a deacon! And both he and Marty still serve, not so much in the capacity as deacon and wife but check out who you are likely to see serving in whatever capacity they are needed. You will still see them serving the body as God gives them the strength and opportunity. It’s that spiritual DNA thing! This Sunday evening, October 15th, we will have the opportunity to honor Gene for his service to us and other churches. We will designate Gene as Deacon Emeritus. You need to be there as well. At 6 p.m. we will gather in the Fellowship Hall for this very special service and party.
