“But select capable men from all the people — men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain — and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.” ~ Exodus 18:21~ Well we finally did it! Who is the “we” and what “did” we finally do, you ask? Good question. The “we” is Barbara and myself. The “did” is vote. We cast our ballots today. (OK, we actually filled them out and put them in the mailbox — but we did get to keep our cool “I Voted Early” stickers!) Would you agree that this election cycle has been different than most? Although different, it is still vitally important, as are they all. Like you, I get frustrated almost every election at some results, but I am always glad that I got to cast my vote and make my voice heard. Voting is one of the privileges that we have as Americans that I pray we never lose. Listen to some notable voices from the past on the issue of government and voting here in America: “Should things go wrong at any time, the people will set them to rights by the peaceable exercise of their elective rights.” —Thomas Jefferson, 1743-1826 (Third President of the United States) “When the righteous rule, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.” —William Paterson, 1745-1806 (Signer of the Constitution and Supreme Court Justice)
I am glad we got to vote in this election. I am glad my children will get to vote in this election. My prayer is that someday my grandchildren and their grandchildren will still have that right. It distresses me that so many Christians feel that their vote does not matter — or that they just don’t bother to vote — even though they are registered voters! The numbers in this box are alarming! 25 million Christians not voting! — Not expressing a Biblical World View through their participation in our democratic process. — Not recognizing that it was God who ordained the institution of governments by which the whole world operates. — Not engaging with our communities, country and ultimately our world in one of the ways God has given to us. Christian friends, there are just too many important decisions that we need to make on November 8th to ignore our vote. This is our opportunity to actually vote our faith. I know, not everyone that we may vote for is a Christian, but our responsibility is to vote for people and on issues that will at least move us in the direction of our faith. Make sure that you cast your ballot in a way that you become as much light as possible in a very dark world. Blessings on your week as you practice being light in our world by voting early, or preparing to vote at the polls on November 8th by deciding on the people and issues before us. Pastor Terrell P.S. Just a reminder that Veterans Day is Friday, November 11th and our Veterans Recognition Service will be Sunday morning, November 13th. If you are a Veteran, we encourage you to wear your uniform or something that identifies your branch of service that day. P.P.S. Here’s one more voice from the past as we leave: “Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again.” —Ronald Reagan, 1911-2004 (Fortieth President of the United States)
