1 Corinthians 7:17-40 “Have Thine Own Way, Lord” “Standing on the Promises”

Offerings and Connection Cards will be collected in the Offering Boxes located just inside the two main entrances into our Worship Center, as well as in the Office Hallway.

“I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.” ~ Joshua 14:11 (NIV) ~ AN OLDIE BUT GOODIE (I hope) Feeling a little nostalgic this week, I looked back at the blog I wrote last time my birthday fell on a Sunday, wondering what God was saying to me that day. I thought I might share it again with you. (I’m sure you will all remember it as well as I did!) So here is my blog for February 4, 2018: It happened two weeks ago, all on the same day. In our 6:30 a.m. Men’s Fraternity group we were challenged — since we are all over 50 — to dream 2nd half dreams. I was encouraged by that. I came to my office confident that I still have many productive years ahead. But then, a millennial blogger I follow wrote that “Pastors are too Old!” I received a card from the Neptune Society inviting me to use their services — threw it away — and went out for a run. I hurt my back within the first 5 minutes of running! Since then, one of my grandsons was looking at the wedding photo of Barbara and I, and he does not believe it is me because the guy in the picture has dark hair and Papa’s hair isn’t dark. Actually, it mostly just isn’t! Since that day, I read Dr. Charles Stanley’s comment that at 85-years-old he has no plans to retire — as he stated, “retirement isn’t biblical.” I was once again encouraged!

Maybe you’ve noticed that I never miss an opportunity to point out when someone a little older than the rest does something noteworthy. I do this because again and again I hear aging people talk as if their options are fewer now than they used to be. It might be true to some extent; maybe the job market isn’t as bright for a 50-year-old as it is for 25-year-old. But don’t let yourself believe that you’re running out of opportunities, and don’t use it as an excuse to slow down. continued

As I inch my way toward 65 — as I write, today is the 1st, not the 4th — I find that I feel better (certainly more optimistic) than I did 20 or 30 years ago. Life is good. You might think you’re too old, but you’re not. You might think the best days are behind you, but they’re not. You might think the future is limited, but it’s not. God still has plans for you; He’s not finished with you yet. Not by a long shot. I was reading in Joshua recently the verse found above. It was Caleb — over 40 years after Moses sent him to spy out the Promised Land — who spoke the words we find in Joshua 14:11. If I have another 30 years on this planet, I want to be able to speak these words with Caleb. I want to be as strong then as I am now, as eager to enter the battle then as I am today.

If Charles Stanley can keep doing all he does at 85, you and I can stay on the battlefield a little longer. The options are limited only for those who take refuge in the sidelines. Those who stay in the game will always have more than enough to keep them busy. Blessings on your week as you look for new ways to serve! I do very much look forward to worshipping with you all this Sunday morning when we will be looking at BIG PICTURE DISCIPLESHIP. Meanwhile, let’s determine to stay at the work with all our energy this week.

Pastor Terrell Dear First Southern Family,

P.S.

We want to express our deepest appreciation for the very generous gift you gave to us and for taking the time to celebrate with us on our 50th anniversary this past Sunday. You all hold a very special place in our hearts!

- That Sunday was my 65th Birthday — I ran, and completed, the Surf City Half Marathon on that day — sore back and all. I call it my Medicare Marathon! You can do the math if you want to know how old I will be this Sunday.

With all our love,

- Charles Stanley continued to pastor First Baptist Church, Atlanta, until 2020 when he did retire as Senior Pastor, but kept working at In Touch Ministries right up to the age 90 when God took him home last April. - The mail will not arrive until this afternoon, but the Neptune Society has yet to contact me this year. Maybe they realize by now that they are just wasting money sending postcards to me.
