Then we went down the hill to a small cottage where we were staying. That afternoon the pastor of the local Baptist church came to call. He was an Englishman, and he too was 75; a widower who spent most of his time taking care of his two invalid sisters. He was full of enthusiasm and love for Christ and others. ‘I don’t have two pounds to my name,’he said with a smile, ‘but I am the happiest man on this island.’”

After they left, Graham he asked his wife Ruth, ‘Who do you think is the richer man?’He says she didn’t have to reply because they both already knew the answer.”

Generosity is an interesting thing.

Sometimes people who have much that this world has to offer seem afraid to be generous with others. They try to hold to all they have with a cliched fist. Seems reasonable after all, they worked hard for what they have. These are people who seldom find inner joy and fulfillment.

Sometimes people who don’t have very much that this world has to offer act the same way. They also seem afraid to be generous with others. They try to hold to the little they have with a cliched fist. Also seems reasonable after all, they worked hard for what little they have. These are also people who seldom find inner joy and fulfillment.

And then sometimes people who have much and people who have little of what this world has to offer choose a different path. They choose the path of generosity. They choose to open their hands up to others rather than to clinch their fists. The surprising thing about them is that whether they have much or little to be generous with they tend to end up at the same place. They are those who do find inner joy and fulfillment. They prosper. They end up being refreshed.

Blessings on your week. Have you done a generosity check of your own hands lately? Are your fists tired from hanging on too tightly to what you have or do your open palms allow God to bring refreshing joy into your soul? I do look forward to seeing you this Sunday as I continue my Sermon Series The Business of Living. We will look this weekend at What You Sow Is What You Get.

“A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.”

TRUE WEALTH

In his autobiography JustAs IAm, Billy Graham recalls a story demonstrating that true greatness is not defined by wealth or fame, but by character.

“Some years ago Ruth and I had a vivid illustration of this on an island in the Caribbean. One of the wealthiest men in the world had asked us to come to his lavish home for lunch. He was 75 years old, and throughout the entire meal he seemed close to tears.

‘I am the most miserable man in the world,’he said. ‘Out there is my yacht. I can go anywhere I want to. I have my private plane, my helicopters. I have everything I want to make my life happy, yet I am as miserable as hell.’We talked to him and prayed with him, trying to point him to Christ, who alone gives lasting meaning to life.
