“As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.” ~ Psalm 103:13 (ESV) ~

You probably know most of Johnny Cash’s story. He became famous in the fifties at the same time as Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. While his career skyrocketed, his personal life bottomed out: he nearly destroyed himself with drugs and alcohol.

In the late sixties he gave his life to Christ, gave up drugs, and married June Carter.Acouple of years later his son, John Carter Cash, was born.

Johnny Cash was determined not to repeat the mistakes that he made with his four daughters. One significant change was that Cash spent a lot of time with his son. He took John on the road with him. When they were home, he took him fishing. When John became an adult, father and son worked together in the studio, and they wrote songs together. They were, in Johnny’s words, “like soulmates.”

Johnny Cash will always be remembered as a legend in country music. But when he was once asked how he would like to be remembered, he simply said, “I’d like to be remembered as a good daddy.”

TheApostle Paul tells us, almost in passing, what it means to be a “good daddy.”

Here’s how the Message Bible says it:

“… With each of you we were like a father with his child, holding your hand, whispering encouragement, showing you step-by-step how to live well before God, who called us into his own kingdom, into this delightful life.”

~ 1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 (The Message) ~

That’s the process of being a good dad. It involves some handholding, some whispered encouragement, and some step-by-step teaching.

Sometimes it seems like we will never succeed. Sometimes we just seem to run out of energy. Often, we’re just not sure what to do next.

Fortunately, we have a promise given to us in Isaiah. He tells us we can continually find new strength to keep moving forward even in the complexities of parenting.

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

~ Isaiah 40:28-31 (ESV) ~

That seems to be what every Dad I know no matter what stage of life they are in feels like they need. Turns out that we need God’s strength because the challenges of fatherhood are so daunting. So, Dads, here’s to meeting the challenge.

Blessings on your week. I do look forward to seeing you this Sunday as we are now in Part Three of Good News for the Not So Good. We will look this weekend at Love: It’s the Greatest!
