All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

GPS AND THE BIBLE

The BBC once carried the report of a London ambulance driver who turned what should have been a 12-mile drive into a 200-mile journey that equaled roughly half the entire length of England. The driver was so focused on following the directions from the ambulance’s navigation system that he failed to pay attention to his surroundings and the fact that the trip was taking hours instead of just minutes.

There have been numerous stories of drivers whose faith in their navigation systems have led them to ignore road signs warning them of closed bridges, one-way streets, and in the village of Luckington, signs warning them that the road they are on will take them directly through a ford at the beginning of theAvon River. An average of two drivers per day follow their GPS directly into the ford, which is known as The Splash.

Finally, the village of Exton has installed England’s first “Do Not Follow Sat Nav” signs.Ahuge increase in damage to the curbs and hedges along a narrow road there prompted citizens to ask the village government to post the signs. The lane which is only six feet wide was part of a route that navigation systems were directing truck drivers to even though the road is off limits to large vehicles.

Not to belittle the British, I have to confess that on more than one occasion I have followed the GPS in my car to places I never intended to go to rather than to the destination I really wanted to arrive at.

It so easy to believe that those little gadgets are smart enough to get us to the right destination. They look fancy on our dashboards. They talk to us like they care for us.And yes, at times they lie to us about getting to our destination on time.

Unfortunately, there are hundreds, even thousands of false GPS gadgets besides the ones in our car or phones that have no problem making us promises of glitzy outcomes with our lives while all the while lying to us. It behooves us to beware!

Navigation systems that rely on GPS technology can be an enormous asset in many situations. Still they are not infallible and they are not right for every situation. As we navigate through the terrain of our lives we know that when we need direction we can always find it in scripture. The Bible cannot become obsolete. It won’t lead you to dead ends. It will always show you the way which is right. That is why these verses are so important:

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

~ 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV) ~

Unlike even the [unnamed] Carplay System God’s GPS is a system that we can always count on.

Blessings on your week. Become aware this week of the GPS sources you are listening to and counting on. Make sure that God’s GPS the Bible is where you find the direction for your life. I’m looking forward to seeing you this coming Sunday for In-Person or Online Worship. We are continuing the last section of IMMERSE. This week we’re looking first at ACrash Course on Finding God’s Word.
