“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful... And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

~ Colossians 3:15, 17 (NIV) ~ A grandmother is watching her grandchild play on the beach when a huge wave comes along and takes him out to sea. She cries out, “Please God, save my only grandson. I beg of you, bring him back.”

Suddenly a big wave comes and washes the boy back onto the beach, good as new. She looks up to heaven and says: “He had a hat!” That’s gratitude for you. Have you noticed that some people just can’t be satisfied? Some people — and I’m talking about you and me, not someone else — have a hard time expressing gratitude. Or even feeling it. In 2001, Stephen Post, a medical school professor of bioethics, created a research group called the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love, dedicated to testing and measuring the effects of love, gratitude, and other positive caring emotions in human life. Dr. Post’s research has discovered that spending 15 minutes a day focused on things you’re grateful for can have the following effects on our physical health: 1. It increases your body’s natural antibodies. 2. It increases mental capacity and reduces vulnerability to depression. 3. It creates a physiological state of “resonance”, improving your blood pressure and heart rate. That’s gratitude for you. It not only lifts up the recipient, it also gives life to the one expressing it. This is why we’re told time and time again in scripture to give thanks: A thankful heart puts us in right alignment with God and one another. Now, that’s gratitude for you! Blessings on your week as you choose gratitude. Don’t forget to engage with us in worship this Sunday. Pastor Terrell

P.S. And on the subject of gratitude … Let me again thank all of you — our wonderful First Southern family — for the very generous Pastor Appreciation gifts you gave to Pastors Scott, Ken and myself last Sunday morning. You are the best!

Hello First Southern family! First off, I would like to thank everyone for the kind words and generous gifts last Sunday. I really appreciate all of them, and I appreciate you, my church family. Secondly, I’d like to tell you about a journey. That journey began on Sunday, September 9, 2001. Bill Eash had just retired from leading the music and I had been asked to fill in until someone was found to replace him. I don’t know if it was warm or not on that Sunday, but I certainly felt warm as I led worship for the first time that Sunday. What I remember even more clearly is coming to worship the next Sunday after 9/11 feeling like the world around us was going crazy. I can remember how odd we all felt, yet at the same time I remember how comforting and uplifting it was to sing praises to our Lord during that time. Fast forward to now, a little over nineteen years later. The world around us is back to feeling crazy, but it is still just as comforting and uplifting to sing praises to our Redeemer and Lord. During that nineteen year journey, through crazy and not so crazy times the Lord has always been there, and He has never been surprised at what we have gone through. I am blessed during that time to have been able to work with wonderful people in our choir, and I have had the privilege of leading worship on Sundays with many different musicians who willingly gave of their time. And what a blessing to have been able to have both of my sons join me on the praise team during their high school years! But now, my time to lead worship is coming to an end, and it is someone else’s turn. Sunday, November 8 will be my last Sunday. It has been a wonderful experience, which took many unexpected twists and turns, and lasted a lot longer than I ever imagined when I said “yes.” Thank you all so much for joining me on that journey! In appreciation, Scott
