“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you… My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” ~ John 15:9, 12-13 ~ Memorial Day weekend. The unofficial beginning of Summer. So much to do. Parades, picnics, finally a chance to get away now that the kids are out of school, the Indy 500, baseball games — none are bad choices! However, let’s not forget to not forget. In April 1863, in Columbus, Mississippi, a group of ladies gathered at a local cemetery to decorate the graves of fallen Confederate soldiers. After decorating graves of her two sons who served during the Civil War as Confederate soldiers, an elderly woman also decorated two mounds at the corner of the cemetery. An observer asked, “What are you doing? Those are the graves of two Union soldiers.” The reply, “I know. I also know that somewhere in the North, a mother or a young wife mourns for them as we do for ours.” That little band of ladies set in motion what has become Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is set aside each year to remember those who gave their lives in the armed forces. We remember those 1,450,808 who died on far away battle fields to bring freedom and democracy to oppressed peoples. We commemorate their actions by honoring them in ceremonies across the land. We sometimes call it Decoration Day because we decorate the graves of fallen heroes with flags and flowers. We must remember the opportunities and freedoms that are ours in our great country have come to us with a high price tag. Let’s not forget to honor those who have given their all — laying down their lives for their friends out of love. Remember also the thousands of spouses, parents, children and close friends of fallen veterans who will mourn this weekend as they also remember. This Sunday here at First Southern, we will also take time to remember peace — specifically — peace with God — the One who made the most powerful and important sacrifice in all of history. As we continue our journey through the book of Romans, we will get to know more about Jesus, The Lamb of God. We will discover together that the greatest paradox of all time — The Lamb of God who defeated the powers hell, the powers of sin and the grave — gives us life and peace! Blessings on your week as you find opportunity to remember, rejoice and be thankful. Pastor Terrell
