“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” ~ Ephesians 4:32 ~

BIBLE HEROES WHO FORGAVE A powerful example of forgiveness emerged from an experience of such horror that is difficult for us to imagine. During the Holocaust, countless children were exterminated at the Ravensbruck concentration camp. When the place was finally liberated, a piece of paper was found, placed with the body of a dead child; on the paper were the words written by an unknown dead prisoner. “O Lord, remember not only the men and women of good will, but also those of ill will. But do not remember all the suffering they have inflicted on us — remember instead the fruits we have bought, thanks to this suffering: our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, our courage, our generosity, the greatness of heart which has grown out of all this. And when those who have inflicted suffering on us come to judgment, let all the fruits which we have borne be their forgiveness.” [The Hidden Jesus, p. 149] We recognize, of course, how this prayer is similar to the words of forgiveness that Christ spoke on the cross: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” ~ Luke 23:34 ~

It is also similar to Stephen’s prayer when he was martyred by the angry mob. “Then he fell on his knees and cried out, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’” ~ Acts 7:60 ~

Have you ever prayed that prayer? The offenses we endure are comparatively minor and yet, if you’re like me, sometimes these offenses aren’t easily forgotten. We hold a grudge and hope God gets even with them. This Tuesday we begin four evenings of learning about the wonderful benefits of being a Non-Avenger — choosing to forgive when everything in us wants to inflict vengeance and pain on someone who has hurt us. In our KIDS’ BIBLE CLUB we will be looking at four Non-Avengers — Bible Heroes Who Forgave. Our kids will be learning from the likes of the Prodigal Son’s Dad, David, Abigail, Stephen and of course, Jesus. They will be challenged to forgive others because God loves and forgives them — to think of someone whom it is difficult for them to love and look for ways to show kindness to them — to pray for someone by name who has hurt their feelings or been unkind to them — to set an example for their friends by not talking bad about others or join in making fun of others. We could go on and on with others in the Bible who forgave. Why? Because the theme of forgiveness is huge in God’s Word. The very first indication of forgiveness comes right away in Genesis 3 — and then continues throughout the remainder of Scripture. God knew the pain and destruction that a life of unforgiveness will produce — and that is not His will for us. You and I — and our kids — need to remember that we will never be more like Jesus, we’ll never be more holy, than when we say, “Lord, do not hold this against them — Father, forgive them.” Blessings on your week as you find opportunity to bestow forgiveness and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday in a time of Communion. Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

us come before Him with thanksgiving and extol Him with music and song.

Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.

I love to watch sports. My favorite sports to watch are football, tennis, and basketball, but of those three the only one I ever played was tennis. I really enjoy playing tennis, but if you were to follow me around for a few days, or weeks, or even months, you wouldn’t know it because I haven’t actually gone out and played since, well I actually don’t remember the last time I went out and played. continued ... Every time I watch a match I think about going out and playing, but I lost contact with the guys I used to play with and I haven’t made the effort to either reconnect or find a new group. It turns out you can’t actually play tennis without going out and doing something about it. Tennis isn’t the only thing that requires some action on my part to actually participate. Worship requires action as well, and that action depends on the situation. Sometimes the actions will be obvious, like “sing.” Sometimes they won’t be, like “be still and know that I am God.” In Psalm 95, the psalmist focuses on worshipping together, and he includes three sentences that begin with the word “come.” Just like I can’t play tennis from my recliner, I need to gather with other believers in order to worship together. Just gathering together isn’t the goal, however. The psalmist encourages the people of the Lord to sing, shout, extol, bow and kneel. We are encouraged to sing for joy and then just in case we aren’t sure why we should be joyful we are reminded of our salvation and told that it’s ok to shout about it as well. As we come with thanksgiving we are instructed to extol our Lord with music and song. We don’t use the word “extol” much, but it means to praise enthusiastically. We have all seen people get excited when their favorite team wins, and the psalmist is encouraging us to bring at least some of that enthusiasm to our worship as we sing. That isn’t where it worship stops in this psalm, though. Bow and kneel indicate that we realize that we are encountering the living God and that it is incredible that we can come before Him at all. It is only because of our Savior’s deliverance that we can come into His presence. The psalmist would have had in mind the deliverance of Israel on numerous occasions; we have in mind our deliverance through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Maybe I’ll get around to playing tennis again one of these days, or maybe not. In the end that won’t really matter. What will matter is that I worship the living God with my whole heart; that I sing to Him and praise Him enthusiastically, and that I bow before Him in humble reverence. Come, let us worship our Lord together!
