“Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God's Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.” ~ Ephesians 4:11-13 (NLT) ~ I am so glad that Jesus continues to give gifts to His Bride — the Church — which by the way — is us! It is my pleasure to announce to you by way of introduction, the man both I and our our Personnel Committee believe is the pastor Jesus is sending us to fill a great need. We believe that Rev. Ken Kopal is the person He is sending to fill the new position of Associate Pastor of Family Life Ministries here at First Southern. We have searched long and far for the right person, even hearing from people interested in the position from as far away as the country of India. Ken doesn’t come from quite so far away — he and his wife Anna live just over in Skull Valley. In fact, Ken and Anna came to First Southern before knowing anything about our search. Pastor Ken, as you will read, is eminently qualified to step into this roll of overseeing all of our work with kids birth through High School and their parents. He will not do all of the work — nor will he reach all of the kids and families. What he will do is equip, train and motivate all of us to do our part in those tasks. That’s why Jesus gives pastors to the church. I encourage you to pray with us, be here Sunday morning to worship with us and hear from Pastor Ken yourself, and then come back Sunday evening at 6:00 pm to vote in our Special Called Business Meeting for the purpose of calling Ken Kopal to this position. God bless you as you help us seek God’s will in this — and I hope you have/or had a great 4th of July — depending on when you read this. Pastor Terrell

INTRODUCING KEN & ANNA kOPAL My name is Ken Kopal. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, until I went into the Marine Corp for four years. It was during that time I met my wife, Anna. We have been married 43 years and have four kids, seven grand-kids and nine great grand-kids. I first had the privilege to serve as a Deacon at South Reno Baptist Church in Reno, Nevada. While serving there, I was asked to serve as interim Pastor for His Love Baptist in Reno until they asked me to be their Pastor. The church ended up merging with First Baptist Reno where I served as Associate Pastor. Later I served other roles within different churches as our jobs moved us around. Currently, I work at Computer Guidance as Director of Software Development, and I have been with them for over ten years. Before this, I served in numerous technology roles as development manager, programmer, business analyst, and project manager. I recently completed my degree in Christian Ministries from Arizona Christian University. Ken Kopal

Since this is the week of July 4 , naturally my thoughts turned to freedom, and I started wondering about what sort of songs were sung during the revolutionary war. Everyone is familiar with one of the favorites: Yankee Doodle. There were a number of other songs popular during that time, but the only other one that I was familiar with as I was looking at song lists was Chester by William Bennings. It’s one of the first tunes I remember playing in beginning band, and it was a staple during the revolutionary war. Some of the lyrics are specifically about events in the war, but others are more general. Here two verses that stand out: Let tyrants shake their iron rod, and Slav'ry clank her galling chains, We fear them not, we trust in God, New England's God forever reigns. What grateful Off'ring shall we bring? What shall we render to the Lord? Loud Halleluiahs let us Sing, and praise his name on ev'ry Chord. Of course, singing songs during times of national struggle or crisis is not a new thing. It doesn’t take much time to run across a number of psalms that speak to Israel’s need for God as a nation. In Psalm 106 the psalmist, perhaps David, recounts how despite the Lord saving them from captivity that they turned away from Him time and again, but still He did not abandon them. The psalm finishes with a prayer for the nation, asking for deliverance and praising the Lord: Save us, Lord our God, and gather us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise. Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Let all the people say, “Amen!” Praise the Lord.
Thinking of freedom also brought to mind a new song by the Christian artist, Austin French, titled “Freedom Hymn.” Much like “Amazing Grace” this song isn’t about national deliverance, but rather about freedom on a personal level that comes about through faith in Jesus Christ. He sings: I push, I pull, go back and forth finding myself pounding on a locked door I try to make it out alone without Your help, but I know I'll never win this war I can never be, never be, free without You I can never be, never be, me without You

I breathe the air of freedom in knowing my life is better off in Your hands The past is gone, what's done is done. Now I'm alive and I'm never gonna look back I can never be, never be, free without You I can never be, never be, me without You

The freedom and salvation that we have, thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus, is what our nation and our world desperately needs, and it is only available one by one as each individual offers his or her life to Christ. That’s something worth singing about for sure!
