2 Corinthians 9:6-7/page 159, paragraph 7

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship.” ~ Romans 12:11 (NIV) ~

NEED A LITTLE NUDGE? Considering my sermon last Sunday: A Crash Course on Spiritual Priorities, I thought it might be helpful to look at the three Spiritual Priorities of Discipline, Discernment and Dependence through another lens. We must not forget that we have a Biblical mandate to present our bodies as living sacrifices that are pleasing to God as an act of worship. About four years ago, researchers at San Diego State University (Go Aztecs!) looked at whether a simple sign could persuade people to make better choices. For 10 non-consecutive days they posted a sign in front of an airport escalator encouraging travelers to take the stairs instead. Some examples: Please reserve the escalator for those who need it.

“The Potter’s Hand” “Build Your Kingdom Here”

Don’t lose time, lose weight. Use the stairs. If you want to feel younger, act younger. Step it up! Use the stairs.

Offerings and Connection Cards will be collected in the Offering Boxes located just inside the two main entrances into our Worship Center.

Until further notice, we will be having Family Services.

The result? On days when the sign was present, twice as many people took the stairs. Significantly, the prompts appeared to work for everyone: those who never exercise and those who exercise frequently were both persuaded to take the stairs this time — and even those loaded down with luggage and rushing to catch a flight — because of the sign.

Sometimes all you need is a little nudge. Maybe a note strategically placed near the refrigerator, near the door, near your computer, near your sofa is all you need to make the next good decision. Who knows? It could work.

with our activities

Those close to you could sometimes use a nudge, too. (A nudge, not a nag.) Most of us know what we need to do, but apparently it helps to be reminded. Let’s see if we can make it habit to remind ourselves and gently remind one another to make those much need physical changes — that are really spiritual changes. Let’s work together to present ourselves holy and pleasing to God. “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as in fact you are doing.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV) ~ Blessings on your new week as you join us in Worship this Sunday morning and then spend at least five minutes a day meditating on God’s Word.
