“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” ~ Galatians 6:9 ~

PASTORAL STAFF

I’ve been thinking about running lately. I once was a marathon runner. In fact, have completed seven of them along with that many half-marathons. I’m not bragging, I’m just wanting to do some more.

Terrell Eldreth, Senior Pastor

To clear-up a misnomer — when I say that I was once a marathon “runner” — what I actually mean is that I was a marathon “plodder”. I was definitely a middle-of-the-pack finisher. I did fairly well in my age group, but I never even saw the elite racers of the pack. The medal ceremony was long over and they were back at their hotels by the time I crossed the finish line!

Albert Einstein once said about his accomplishments:

Phone: 928-772-7218

“It’s not that I'm so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.”

www.firstsouthernpv.org fsbcpv@firstsouthernpv.org

We tend to attribute Einstein’s greatness to his genius. He attributed it to his persistence.

SUNDAY SCHEDULE

Missionary and social reformer William Carey said something similar.

• Sunday School for all ages 9:00 AM

“I can plod. I can persevere in any definite pursuit. To this I owe everything.” Like Einstein, Carey attributed his accomplishments not to his own brilliance, but to simple persistence. continued ...

• Morning Worship Service 10:30 AM • Kidz 4 Christ during Morning Worship • Evening Worship Service

I love both of these quotes because these strengths — persistence and perseverance — are strengths that anyone can choose to have.

That’s what the Apostle Paul is referring to in Galatians 6:9. For all that he had going for him — he knew that his greatest strength from a human standpoint was his ability to stick with it. Whatever his ministry or life goal, he just kept plodding toward it. Some he accomplished rather quickly, others he plodded toward for many years. Some came at great personal cost, sacrifice and suffering. Yet the day came when he could say: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day — and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” ~ 2 Timothy 4:7-8 ~

You may never be as talented as you would like to be, or have the resources that you would like to have, and you may not always get the immediate results that you would like to get — but you can plod. You can stay with problems longer than others do. And you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish. You may even feel that way about First Southern sometimes. We may not run as fast as some of the “elite” churches. Instead, in some areas we know that our best approach is a slow but steady plod. Maybe it’s not as exciting all the time. It doesn’t always come with all the applause of others and excitement — but in the end, we will cross the finish line set before us and receive the prize set there just for us! God may be calling you to keep on keeping on right now. If so, it’s alright to run fast when you can — and to plod when that’s the best you can. He may be calling you to prepare for the race. If so, lace up your running shoes and join with us. Let us help you grow in your discipleship so that you can compete in the race. Will you face the temptation to quit on your ministry goals as you get weary? You can count on it. However, every day you can be as persistent as you want to be. Just don’t give up on the goal of reaching the finish line.
