with church this Sunday!
When I watch TV these days I almost never watch it live. Not even sporting events, which form the majority of what I watch. Partly that’s because the events I want to watch are often on when I’m busy, but mostly it’s because I don’t want to watch commercials; at least not most of them. I’ll watch the funny ones, but I hardly ever watch any of the local commercials. As I speed through them, however, I have noticed one in particular since it seems to be on a lot. It’s a commercial from a Phoenix casino that has the tagline “You do you.” I’m pretty sure that what they mean by that is “You go ahead and give us all of your money and don’t worry about the consequences” but that doesn’t really have quite the same ring to it. The strange thing about “You do you” is that in at least a certain sense the apostle Paul would agree with that slogan. When Paul says in Romans 12:4 “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,” he is in a way saying “You do you.” And when in I Corinthians 12:17 he says “If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?” he is in a way pointing out what happens if you don’t “do you.” Of course, what Paul is really saying is more than just “You do you.” What he is really saying is “You do Christ in you” which is where to power to be the best you comes from. However, my best “me” isn’t going to be the same as your best “you”, and that’s what makes the body of Christ work the way that it’s supposed to work. And there’s no better time than now to discover how the “best you” can contribute to the body of Christ. If you’ve already discovered your area of service in the body, then I encourage you to enjoy where God has placed you. And if you aren’t sure just what your place is, then why not make it a matter of prayer to see what God has in store for you? I’m confident that He will show you, because as Paul said “in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be.” Pastor Scott
