“Let your gentleness be evident to all...” Philippians 4:5 (NIV) As I write this morning — Wednesday, September 18th, I am thinking about Cheeseburgers! Why, you ask? Because according to K-Love radio, today is National Cheeseburger Day! In case you think I’m making that up — Barbara and I both heard it — me in the car and she at home. The difference between how we both reacted to that news was staggering. I immediately invited her out to eat cheeseburgers for dinner. Barbara’s reaction was that we had cheeseburgers for dinner last night — so we don’t need them again today! There’s no accounting to how people react so differently. People see, hear, or read the same things — and have completely different opinions about them. Of course, we can actually account for the differences on some levels. God did not make us all the same. For example, men and women are very different — seemingly in every way imaginable — and that’s a good thing. Life would be very boring otherwise. However, that reality can lead to some difficulties when we don’t learn how to appreciate and handle those differences in Biblical ways. On the other hand — many of our differences of opinion are simply due to our old, sinful nature. That nature that just wants what it wants regardless of other’s opinions — and regardless even of God’s will. When we bully our opinions on our spouse — or those we work with — or even in our church family, we are not glorifying God. God’s desire is that we live with a spirit of gentleness. There are some things that we must stand firm on — no question about that. But there are some things that can and should take a lighter approach. continued ...

For example, right in the middle of our CONNECTIONS SEMINAR for New Members here at First Southern, we talk about our Statements of Faith — that’s what we believe. We make three statements before getting into the particulars. We say: In Essential Beliefs — We Have Unity That means, for example, that when it comes to God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, we insist on unity. When it comes to man (who we are as sinful, broken people) and Salvation — we must have a unified opinion as a church. In Non-Essential Beliefs — We Have Liberty That means that in some areas of our beliefs, we have some room to see things differently. We might disagree about when Jesus will come again or if you are Pre, Mid, or Post Trib. (If you don’t know what that part means — don’t worry too much about it. Just come and talk to me — and I’ll be glad to share my point of view — in a gentle manner of course.) In All Our Beliefs — We Show Charity That means that we will love you — no matter what. We may not agree with all of your beliefs or your lifestyle — but we will still love you. No bullying. Just Christ love in and through us to you! Blessings on your week as you allow the Holy Spirit to guide your interactions with those around you who see things a little differently. See you this Sunday. Pastor Terrell P.S. Since I don’t get to have a cheeseburger today, I won’t even get into the debate about where to get the best burger — In-and-Out or Five Guys. That will just have to wait for another day. ***********************************************************************************************************************
