“Through Him then, let’s continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, The fruit of lips praising His name.” Hebrews 13:15 NASB2020 Pastor Terrell asked me to write the newsletter article for this week, so I thought I would share some years-long studied thoughts about worship. Let me say right away that I will NOT be talking about music. Worship and music are not necessarily the same subject. Music is a tool to help us worship, but is not the only tool. I have in my library, in the neighborhood of, about 50 books on the subject of worship, and most of them never mention music. One can sing out loud all of the songs done on Sunday morning, even singing with great gusto, but if the heart is not directed toward God in humble adoration of His greatness and all He has done for us, then, for that person, it is not worship, it is merely singing. Yes, I know that some have developed the habit of not joining in on the singing because they think they don’t sing very well. God looks on the heart, not on the quality of the voice of the one singing to Him, so I encourage you to give your praise to Him with your lips and voice, as Scripture says that we should do that for the glory of God. Whoops! I said I wouldn’t talk about music, but I couldn’t help putting that encouragement in! True worship is costly! The concept of giving to God as a part of worship can be seen throughout the Bible. The entire Old Testament sacrificial system was set up as a means of giving to the Lord. People brought their animals, which they had spent time and energy nurturing and caring for, to offer as a sacrifice to God. Their worship offered something of value to God. King David understood this principle of worship being costly. When the prophet told David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor that belonged to Araunah and sacrifice to the Lord, the Bible tells us that Araunah offered to give David the floor, the oxen, and the wood on which to burn the sacrifice. David, however, understood that simply taking something from someone else to offer to God was not acceptable. David’s response was simple, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” David refused to offer up a sacrifice in which he had no real investment. [see 2 Samuel 24] Although we no longer offer burnt offerings in our day, the word “sacrifice” has come to mean “giving up of something for the sake of another.” We offer our “sacrifice” of praise to the Lord. continued

Look at it from this perspective. If someone were to give you a gift, would you rather receive diamond earrings or plastic ones? A rusted out old car or a brand new Corvette? The same is true for God. He doesn’t want cheap imitations or leftovers. He wants our very best. The Bible is full of references of giving to God. Scripture repeatedly refers to giving glory and honor and thanks to the Lord. Another example in our society is time. We never seem to have enough time to do things that we know are essential. Time to go to Church (worship). Time to spend in prayer (worship). Time to read and study the Word (worship). When we become possessive of our time, refusing to offer it to God, there will be no true worship. Insisting that my time belongs to me is no different than insisting that any material possession truly belongs to me. I once knew someone in a church where I served who stated for all to hear that she didn’t tithe money, because her time was money and she gave a lot of time to the church. Sad. (no worship there!) Luke tells us the story of the woman who broke the expensive jar of perfume to pour it on Jesus. Jesus equated her costly sacrifice, including the jar of perfume, her time and her affection, with her love for Him, her worship of Him. The reality is that to Jesus, she was demonstrating true worship. The costliness itself is not ultimately what God is after. He owns everything we have, so neither you nor I can give Him something from our possessions that He does not already have. So, what’s the point? Very simply, our willingness to give costly worship is an indication of our heart attitude. Ultimately, the Lord is most interested in our hearts. He does not want us to give Him worship in a begrudging sort of way. He is not interested in just the act of worship, unless that act is an expression of our heart. Giving worship to the Lord out of a heart filled with gratitude and praise is truly an act of worship that God enjoys. We could never give to God the smallest portion of what He gave to us, but we should desire to come as often as possible to His house to give our all in worship to Him, and in every area of our lives. I hope to see you here this Sunday to Worship God together. We will honor our Mothers this Sunday, and do so with gladness and thankfulness for them. However, don’t forget that our first and greatest duty, and joy, is to honor our Great God, and to bless His Holy Name. I am thankful for the faithfulness of our worship team each and every week, as they work hard to lead us all in worship. That includes not only those on the stage, Carolyn, Rachel, James, Fred, Sherry, Vicki, Howard, and whenever she can be there, Kristen, but also those very important ones in the sound booth, Marc, Jenn, Johnathan and Darlene. Thank you, all! Pastor Bart
