“And the Lord’s servant must… be kind to everyone…” ~ 2 Timothy 2:24 ~ This week, I asked our own John Clark if I could share the following account — given in his own words — as only he can do. If you are blessed to be on John’s email list as I am, you know that he routinely blesses our day with his memories and stories such as this. For those who do not know John, he and Peggy are long-time members of First Southern. John reimagined the ministry of our Deacon Body when they first arrived. First Southern still benefits greatly from that work. John is now a Deacon Emeritus — and continues to serve the body here. John served as Minister of Music for many years. He and Peggy have taught Sunday School over the years and they have always had deep love for children and youth. He and Peggy have been involved with Scripture distribution as Gideons for many years. A QUIET SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN THE E.R. “Yesterday (June 2nd) Peg started feeling dizzy during the church service. We came straight home and decided we would rest a while before going to eat. About an hour later, Peg could not get out of the bed without help. I was going to call 911, not knowing if she was having a stroke or what; but Peg wanted me to just take her to the Emergency Room. We got there about 3 pm and they got her into a wheelchair; but she needed to go to the restroom. The waiting room was empty, except for a boy who looked about 11 or 12. He was sitting across from the Ladies restroom holding some clothes in his arms. He looked up as I pushed Peg to the restroom and helped her in, I think I said hello as we went by and he smiled and said Hi. This kid looked like he had the world’s burdens on his shoulders, so while I waited for Peg, I sat down two chairs away from him and made some crack about my wife was a “dizzy dame” today. continued …

Close to tears, the boy said they had just flown his Mother and 5-year-old brother to Phoenix in the helicopter. His brother needed emergency surgery and he was scared. I said why don’t we just pray for him right now? He nodded and I prayed for their flight, his brother’s surgery, the doctors and nurses, and a quick recovery for his brother. He thanked me and asked my name, introducing himself as Isaiah. I asked him if he needed a ride home, all the while hoping he didn’t live somewhere like Yarnell or Skull Valley and was relieved when he said his Grandmother was on her way to pick him up. Peg was ready by then and we got her signed in and while waiting for a bed, we sat back down. I quickly went to the car to get a Testament for Isaiah. I had no school Testaments but had a Military “Camo” one which I gave to Isaiah just before his Grandmother came in. Isaiah thanked me and shook my hand as they left together. After many tests, it turned out that Peg had a Urinary Tract Infection and they prescribed meds for it and let us go home at 7 pm. After a quick meal of pancakes, we settled down to mend fences with Poodle “Punkin” for leaving him alone all day. As I sat holding him, I reflected on the afternoon and since Peg’s problem was resolved, I wondered if maybe Isaiah was the real reason that we wound up in the ER.” Blessings on your week as you find opportunity to bestow kindness, and I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday as we discover what to do When Your Life is a Mess.
