August
29
Laila jumped out of bed and ran to the calendar. It was August 29, her birthday. Today she was 4 years old in 2016 and couldn’t wait for her birthday party this afternoon.
Laila hurried to the kitchen. She knew when she ďŹ nished eating mom would start decorating the table.
Mom put a birthday party tablecloth on the table and placed plates, cups, and forks on it. Then she placed Laila’s birthday cake in the middle of the table.
The ďŹ rst guests to arrive were Addy and John.
“When will the surprise come?” asked Laila. “You’ll soon find out,” said Mom.
“It’s time for Pin-the-Tail-on-the-Donkey,” announced Laila.
Addy pinned the tail on the donkey’s nose. John pinned the tail on the donkey’s foot.
“Piñata time,” said Laila.
Then the doorbell rang. Dad answered the door. “Laila, it’s for you,” he called.
Standing at the door was Laila's surprise guest -- a wizard wearing a robe and a pointed hat, and carrying a crystal ball.
“Is this the address, in Chicago, where Laila lives?” asked the wizard.
Laila was so surprised she could only nod her head. “I’m here to tell your future,” said the wizard. “Won’t you please let me step inside?”
“Let me gaze into my crystal ball before you open your gifts, sing, and eat cake and ice cream.
All the guests grinned and wondered what would happen next. The wizard was certainly Laila’s birthday surprise.
“Today, on August 29, 2016, you are 4 years old,” said the wizard. “I see that in the year 2025 you will be 13 and a teenager. My crystal ball shows you are a fantastic...
And in the year 2028, you will be 16 and old enough to drive a car. It looks like a red convertible,” said the wizard. Laila laughed. “A convertible would be so much fun,” she said.
The wizard continued. “When I look farther into the future I see that in 2030 you will be 18 and able to vote in the next election for the President of the United States.
And for a really big number, in 2062 you’ll be 50 years old. Wow! Your cake sure has a lot of candles!”
The wizard took off his hat and bowed. Everyone clapped. Then POOF! In a cloud of smoke the wizard disappeared and left a gift on the table.
Laila picked it up, opened it and pulled out her own wizard’s hat. She put it on her head. It was a perfect ďŹ t!
The End! Happy 4th Birthday Laila.
