PASTOR BOB RUEDEBUSCH
Staff Realignment These are exciting times here at First United Methodist Church! The Staff Parish Committee and I, as lead pastor, have had an opportunity to really look at our staff needs in light of our 5 prescriptions. Our goal is to align our present and future staff member ministry with our vision and mission so that all our staff might more efficiently resource and implement our vision into our next exciting chapter as a congregation. The first phase of this process has been completed and I want to share with you a few of these realignments and new hires.
Tami Prostrollo Tami has been named Director of Administration. In this full-time role, she will work with office management and information technology. Tami will also assist in working with finance and budget, human resources and facility management. Tami will be leaving her role as Children’s Ministry Coordinator.
Lynne Jones Lynne will transition from Congregational Care to a new position that supports our Door to Core prescription. As Discipleship Coordinator, Lynne will lead our Connect First program, organizing our radical hospitality, connecting our members to different servant opportunities, our visitor and new member follow up, and adult and small group ministries.
Senior Pastor First United Methodist Church
Taylor Johnson Taylor will be leaving his work in our Senior High program to be our Worship Leader for both the 11:15am Sunday morning worship in the Fellowship Hall and our 7pm Sunday night First Underground Worship at the Gourley Building at 6th and Main. Taylor will also assist in pastoral duties as assigned.
Ross Leonhardt Ross will be working with our Senior High Youth (9-12) as our part-time Senior High Youth Coordinator.
Donna Kuper Donna will continue in her part-time role as Financial Administrator. She will add to her duties the role of Congregational Care specifically in our Care First program. She will team with Pastor Bill Schmeling our new Minister of Pastoral Care to provide general visitation as well as pastoral care for our church members who are hospitalized, and those who reside in senior residences. We look to expand and strengthen our Heart Touch lay visitation program.
We Are Excited to Announce Two New Hires! Kassidi Smith Kassidi Smith, who is our current Kidstop Director, will add the role of part-time Children’s Ministry Coordinator. We are excited to have

Kassidi with us in both of these vital roles in our church ministry.
Rev. Bill Schmeling We welcome Bill as our part-time Minister of Pastoral Care. He, along with Donna Kuper, will lead our Congregational Care ministry. Bill is a retired licensed local pastor from the Kansas Annual Conference. We look to have Bill’s credentials transferred here to the Dakotas, and are excited to have Bill on our ministry team. Welcome Bill!
New Vision For The Future The final piece to our new staff realignment is the hiring of our Minister of Children, Youth and Family ministries. This position will lead, organize and supervise our ministry and staff related to children, youth and families. We hope to make this hire in early August. We are searching for persons to lead our children’s music ministry as well. The mission of our pastoral and lay staff is to be a resource and to assist in implementing the vision and mission set forth by our Church Council. That mission centers on ministry in worship excellence, reaching the next generation, door to core, and loving our neighbors. We invite you to pray, welcome and support our pastoral and lay staff in our work for God through First United Methodist Church.

Psalm 143:6 says “I stretch out my hands to you; my whole being is like dry dirt, thirsting for you.” (CEB)
Over the last three years, our Y.A. ministry has seen a multitude of changes! We’ve seen numbers grow to as large as 15, we’ve moved locations, done new studies, and found ourselves asking, “What now?”
We are excited to officially launch a new offsite worship service called First Underground on Sunday nights at 7 pm! On September 13, we invite all who thirst, longing to encounter and worship the living God, to join us at 6th and Main in the Gourley Building for a new offsite worship experience. The service will include passionate singing, challenging and uplifting sermons, time of prayer and reflection, and a welcoming feeling of community. Following the service there will be time for fellowship as well as small group opportunities. Each week we will have hot chocolate, tea, and a wide variety of snacks available. Nursery care will be provided!
It’s become clear to me there is still a desire to have a Young Adult small group. Starting on September 13, we will be relaunching our Young Adult small group, which will meet on Sunday night at 8pm at the Gourley Building immediately following First Underground. If you have any questions or ideas, please feel free to contact me at johnsont@sfumc.org
Come and experience God in a whole new way!
GO>>ON Youth Mission Trip 2015 – One Families Experience Quite honestly, I didn’t know what to expect from being a chaperone for the youth mission trip to Orlando in June. In fact, I kind of went with the attitude of “I am going to be driving a van with a bunch of kids I don’t know, through the streets of a HUGE city that I am unfamiliar with and work in the heat and humidity of Florida in late June”.
sermon, she had 5,000+ in the palm of her hand and she led them right where God wanted her to lead them, easily one of the greatest moments I have ever personally witnessed.
What I actually got out of it was this. I met, and became friends with “workgroup #4!” We still send Facebook messages in a group at least once a week, just to keep in touch and see how everyone is doing. We witnessed so many “God Sightings” that I couldn’t keep track, but working with the people of Camp Challenge was an eye opening experience to me.
The enthusiasm and excitement of the youth was certainly contagious, and as the week came to a close, I was thinking to myself how I didn’t want it to end. This “mission trip” became a “Journey” for me. I “Reframed” my way of thinking and I have tried to Go>>On as we were directed and I am thankful that I was “voluntold” for the trip! ~ Nate Knuth
The RALLY!! I don’t think I will ever forget the message given by Rev. Telley Lynnette Gadson. She started out with “when she agreed to speak at the rally, the number 5,000 was never mentioned!” By the end of her
I watched my 2 children who attended. Their excitement, enthusiasm, energy and their willingness to join in on the different projects changed in front of my eyes.
My GO>>ON experience was definitely more than I expected and a lot of fun! I know I made life-long memories. ~ Carter Knuth The mission work we got asked to do was very hard work, but talking to the people in the town and seeing the kids faces made it all worth it. My GO>>ON experience was life changing. ~ Kennedy Knuth 4

H.O.S.T. Groups Upgrades Our H.O.S.T. groups were created so that every member of our congregation would share in hospitality opportunities during one month. The acronym means Hospitality Opportunities, Serving Together. And after more than a year, the fruits of our labor are clearly evident: inactive members have been re-energized after serving during their H.O.S.T month; our “radical hospitality” has increased; we are meeting new people and getting involved in new ministries. H.O.S.T. groups are working! Now it’s time to take our H.O.S.T. groups to the next level with some expanded opportunities, and an expanded acronym - Hospitality, Outreach, Service – Together! As part of our Door To Core Prescription, the role of Sunday morning greeters will transition to our newly formed Connection Team and it will no longer be part of the H.O.S.T group opportunities. (Anyone interested in being a greeter on the Connection Team should contact Lynne Jones.) We also recognize that the previous opportunities of greeting and providing food for funeral lunches were a little limiting. It is our hope that our expanded offerings will provide more diverse opportunities to serve our church and our ministries.
Beginning in September, the new H.O.S.T. group opportunities are: Outreach • Serve during one of our church’s shifts at The Banquet (breakfast on the 3rd Tuesday of each month or dinner at the West side location on a date to be determined) • Serve the Canteen on the Sunday our church hosts (every 6 weeks).
Facility Readiness • Straighten and stock the Sanctuary pew racks for Sunday morning worship – hymnals, prayer cards, pens, offering envelopes. (Weekly, to be completed any time after Wednesday night service and before Sunday morning services). • Prepare the Welcome Center, new Information Center and new Guest Connection Center for Sunday morning - preparing visitor gifts, stocking information/handouts, etc. (Weekly, to be completed any time after Wednesday night service and before Sunday morning services).
Sept - Mike & Cynthia McConniel Anderson, Richard P. & Nedra Arndt, Ron & Donna Baker, Miriam Beck, Dennis & Nancy Bornitz, Todd & Lana Bruggeman, Lynette Christensen, Harold & Nora Costello, Emily Deboer, Randy Duba, Merl & Maxine Entenman, Sandy Ewing, John & Ruth Feistner, Bruce & Joan
Administration • Collate Bulletins and Church Weekly for Sunday worship (Weekly, any time on Thursday or Friday) • Stuff and prepare The Media for mailing
Gill, Michael & Vicki
Hospitality • Greeters for funerals (as needed) • Greeters for special events (as needed)
Johnson, Donna
Kitchen Assistance • Serve and clean up the Wednesday Evening Meal (weekly) • Provide desserts for funerals and other events (as needed) • Dishwashers and coffee makers for special events (as needed)
Lightner, Dora
H.O.S.T. group leaders for each month will still be the primary contact for questions about these opportunities. However, to streamline the sign-up process and communication between the H.O.S.T group leaders and office staff, sign-ups for H.O.S.T. group opportunities will be done through an on-line sign-up process. Don’t have email or a computer? No worries! H.O.S.T group leaders can do the sign-up for you. We are excited about these new opportunities to involve more people in more ministries of our church.
