Director’s note
I am delighted by these Offenbach one-acts. His music is beautiful and a lot of fun, combining so well with his collaborators’ libretti to create rich and absurd playgrounds. As a whimsical surrealist, I feel immediately attuned to the abstract zaniness of all of the pieces. A competitive beggar blows on a trombone . . . of all things. Of course. The “Chinese imperialists,” who yammer at their subjects in faux Italian. Why not? And the gender-confused “girl” and “boy” is missing her . . . um . . . his hummingbird. Sounds to me like SOMEONE’S missing their hummingbird, for sure . . . and a few screws, to boot, in this world where no one is what they seem to be. In a crazy environment like this, I have permission to open up my eccentric toy box, drum up dizzy images and movements, and let my surrealist impulses fly. Add to this the opportunities to flesh out the human emotions and impulses inherent in the stories . . . the interpersonal dynamics of characters with all sorts of games to play. The comical bombast, the yearning and the frailties of human nature are dancing throughout. The peculiar playfulness juxtaposes with the dear romance, consistently. The theatrical dynamics are always bouncing about. All of us are excited to bring these pieces to you in their original French, and we became passionate to make them absolutely compelling without feeding the audience a play-by-play translation. The plots themselves, though gloriously ridiculous, are pretty simple. And the political and social satire of Offenbach’s time is less resonant to us today than the colorful, offbeat scenarios and curious coping mechanisms of the extreme personalities inhabiting these operettas. So, the fun is to keep all of the balls in the air: the beautiful music, the vocal textures, the absurd comedy, the frolicking dances and gestures, and a fabulous design. We attempt to transcend conventional storytelling and present a series of iconic, memorable events that have an abundance of meaning . . . either abstracted from the actual story or in a closer relationship to it. In other words, these pieces are a blast. Enjoy! Ken Roht

James Bagwell Conductor James Bagwell maintains an active schedule throughout the United States as a conductor of choral, operatic, and orchestral literature. He was most recently named music director of the Dessoff Choirs in New York City. Last summer he led performances of Copland’s The Tender Land as part of the Bard SummerScape Festival. Now in his seventh season as music director of Light Opera Oklahoma, this summer he conducts three new productions. In 2003 Bagwell was named director of choruses for the Bard Music Festival. He has trained choruses for many major American orchestras, including the San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, American Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He has worked with noted conductors as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Michael Tilson Thomas, Louis Langrée, Leon Botstein, Raymond Leppard, James Conlon, Christof Perick, Jesús López-Cobos, Erich Kunzel, Leon Fleischer, and Robert Shaw. Bagwell is artistic director for the New York Repertory Singers, and he serves as conductor for the Berkshire Bach Society Chorus and Orchestra. In 2000 he joined the faculty of Bard College, where he is director of the Music Program. Ken Roht Director and Choreographer Ken Roht is the founding, producing, and artistic director of Orphean Circus, a music theater ensemble dedicated to challenging audiences with its original, thoroughly instinctual sights and sounds. He recently received numerous awards, including best score and best production design, for the world premiere of his music theater piece Echo’s Hammer at Pasadena’s Theatre @ Boston Court. Roht is a 2003 recipient of the prestigious Audrey Skirball-Kenis TIME grant. His original song and dance works have also received grants and commissions from the ASK Theater Projects Common Ground Festival, City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and Rockefeller Foundation, and from many Los Angeles theaters, including the REDCAT, Mark Taper Forum, South Coast Rep, Los Angeles Theater Center, Indecent Exposure Theater Company, Cornerstone, and Evidence Room. He has choreographed for En Garde Arts and Gale Gates in New York, Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre Company, Cleveland’s Great Lakes Theater Festival, Seattle’s On the Boards, Long Beach Opera, and Disney’s California Adventures. Roht also works in film, internet, cable, radio, and on recording projects; his work was recently seen at the Getty Museum as part of Bill Viola’s video installation Passions.
Karen Steward Set Designer Karen Steward is a Los Angeles–based art director and production designer. In 2002 she received an award for excellence in production design from the Art Directors Guild of America for her work on the HBO film Live From Baghdad. Her other credits include the television shows Bones, Numbers, and Twin Peaks and the feature films The Abyss and Lackawanna Blues. Steward is also a sculptor; her latest body of work, entitled LensWork, has been exhibited at many Los Angeles galleries, including the Venice Art Walk, Gallery C, and most recently in the exhibition Show and Tell: The Art of Time at the Zimmer Children’s Museum in Beverly Hills. Irina Kruzhilina Costume Designer Irina Kruzhilina is currently designing costumes for a new production of Don Juan in Prague at the Estates Theatre in Prague; the production will be presented at Brooklyn Academy of Music next fall. As resident designer of Filament Theatre Company she designed costumes for Farewell Juliet and Yerma at the Santa Monica Playhouse. Her other design credits include The Merchant of Venice at Milwaukee Shakespeare Company, Italian Straw Hat at Aaron Davis Hall, Big Love at the Chance Theatre, and The Down of Quixote at the 24th Street Theatre. She has worked on many productions in Moscow, including Three Sisters, Master, and New Year’s Fairy Tales at the Moscow Circus, and she designed costumes for the 2004 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. She has two master of fine arts degrees, one from California Institute of the Arts and the other from Moscow Textile University. Brian J. Lilienthal Lighting Designer Brian Lilienthal’s previous operatic work includes The Silent Woman at Long Beach Opera, The Barber of Seville at Portland Opera Repertory Theatre, The Mikado at Boston Academy of Music, Growing with Ghosts, Echo’s Hammer (for which he received a Los Angeles Ovation award), and Splendor!, all of which were directed by Ken Roht. His regional work includes productions at Trinity Repertory Company (where he is the resident lighting designer), Merrimack Rep, Capital Rep, Theater @ Boston Court, and Sledgehammer. In New York he has worked on premieres of plays by Charles Mee, Marguerite Duras, William Yellowrobe, and Ken Roht at the Cherry Lane, Sanford Meisner, La Mama, and Altered Stages, among other venues. He is a cofounder of the performance company Tent. Lilienthal has a master of fine arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts. David Lee Kelting Video and Graphics David Lee Kelting has managed, directed, and designed lighting, sound, and projections for productions in venues from Seattle to Orlando and ranging from
children’s theater to million-dollar industrials. Highlights include his work as production stage manager for Mort Subotnick’s Hungers, sound designer for Dan Evans’s comedy Doing Judy, codirector and videographer for Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters Looking for a Writer, and video for Ken Roht’s Route 99 Orange Star Dinner Show. Kelting is a native of Scottsdale, Arizona, and a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts. Sharon Bjorndal Assistant Conductor and Chorus Master Sharon Bjorndal’s previous SummerScape credits include her work as chorus master for Janacek’s Osud, Shostakovich’s The Nose, and Blitzstein’s Regina. A former assistant chorus master at New York City Opera and visiting chorus master at Opera Company of Philadelphia, Bjorndal has prepared choruses for over 35 productions. She currently serves on the Music Program faculty at Bard College. Lynn Baker Music Preparation Lynn Baker is a vocal coach and collaborative pianist in New York City. She is assistant conductor on the music staff of the New York City Opera and is also on the coaching staff of the Renata Scotto Opera Academy. She was previously associate coach of the Juilliard Opera Center. She has also coached and performed with Opera Festival of New Jersey, Washington Opera, Spoleto Festival USA, Pittsburgh Opera Center, Opera Delaware, American Opera Projects, Tulsa Opera, and Des Moines Metro Opera. As a recitalist, Baker has collaborated with numerous professional singers and instrumentalists; in January 2006 she accompanied soprano Harolyn Blackwell in a PBS-broadcast performance from the East Room of the White House. She is an avid performer of new music, frequently participating in the VOX: Showcasing American Composers program at New York City Opera. She holds a master of music degree in accompanying from The Juilliard School. Cori Ellison Dramaturg Cori Ellison, dramaturg at New York City Opera, has authored English singing translations of Hansel and Gretel, La vestale, and Shostakovich’s Cherry Tree Towers for New York City Opera, English National Opera, and Bard SummerScape, respectively. She is currently dramaturg for Washington National Opera’s Ring cycle, and has lectured at the Royal Opera House/Covent Garden, Wexford Festival, Verbier Festival, Smithsonian Institution, Carnegie Hall, Metropolitan Opera Guild, Santa Fe, Cincinnati, Seattle, and Canadian operas, and the Wagner Societies of New York, Chicago, and Washington. She helped launch the Metropolitan Opera’s simultaneous translation system, Met Titles, and has authored supertitles for opera companies across America. She has been contributing writer for PBS’s Metropolitan Opera
Presents series and contributed to The New Grove Dictionary of Opera and the Metropolitan Opera Guide to Opera on Video. She writes regularly for the New York Times and speaks on the Metropolitan Opera’s radio broadcasts. Mark Bringelson Patachon Mark Bringelson recently appeared at Long Beach Opera as Tiger Brown in The Threepenny Opera, directed by Christopher Alden, and as the Old Prisoner in Offenbach’s La Périchole, directed by David Schweizer and choreographed by Ken Roht. He has also appeared at the Mark Taper Forum, San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre, Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, Evidence Room, and Cornerstone Theatre. He played the character L.M. in several productions of Pump Boys and Dinettes. Bringelson has twice received LA Weekly Awards. His feature films include Heathers, Dead Man, Lawnmower Man, Austin Powers, and Soldier. Matthew Burns Ko-Ko-Ri-Ko, Cacatois Bass-baritone Matthew Burns received a 2006 Richard Gold Career Grant from New York City Opera. His recent engagements include Colline in La Bohème and Zuñiga in Carmen with New York City Opera, Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Florida Grand Opera, Blitch in Susannah with Juilliard Opera Center, and several roles in Shostakovich’s The Nose at the 2004 Bard Music Festival. Burns made his Carnegie Hall debut in Messiah and his Avery Fisher Hall debut in Hindemith’s Das Nusch-Nuschi. Next season he will return to New York City Opera as Colline in La Bohème. He will also perform the title role in Le Nozze di Figaro for Chattanooga Opera, Pallante in Agrippina with Virginia Opera, Schaunard in La Bohème with New Orleans Opera, and he will return to Opera Theater of St. Louis as Pish Tush in The Mikado and Walton in I Puritani. Steven Goldstein Fé-Ni-Han, Romboïdal Tenor and native New Yorker Steven Goldstein has performed with the San Francisco, Los Angeles, New Israeli, Seattle, Chicago, Cleveland, Vancouver, and New York City opera companies, among others. His roles have included Basilio and Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro, Victorin in Die Tote Stadt, Borsa in Rigoletto, Harry in La fanciulla del West, Scaramuccio in Ariadne auf Naxos, Squeak in Billy Budd, several roles in Salome, the Schoolmaster in Martinu’s Comedy on the Bridge, and Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte. His acting credits include productions with the Lincoln Center Theater, McCarter Theater, LA Theater Works, Center City Encores, Baltimore Center Stage, South Coast Repertory Theatre, and La Jolla Playhouse. His films include The Untouchables, House of Games, Homicide, and Things Change.
Peter Jacobs Giraffier Peter Jacobs was a founding member of Reza Abdoh’s company Dar A Luz. He cofounded Chashama Inc., serving as its artistic codirector, and was also artistic codirector, with DD Dorvillier, of the multidisciplinary troupe called human future dance corps. Jacobs has written, directed, and performed in theaters throughout Europe and North America. His most recent projects include Coming Out of the Night With Names, a collaboration with choreographer Dorvillier that was presented by P.S. 122, and For a Private House, a crossmedia collaboration presented by the 2005 Movement Research Festival in New York City. Tonna Miller Fé-An-Nich-Ton, Alexis The young soprano and Texas native Tonna Miller’s recent credits include performances at the Metropolitan Opera as Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro, the title role in Patience with New York City Opera, her debut at Houston Grand Opera as Jano in Jenufa and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, and her debut at Orlando Opera as YumYum in The Mikado. Miller has sung with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis for four seasons; her roles have included Wanda in Offenbach’s La Grande-Duchesse de Gerolstein, Polissena in Handel’s Radamisto, Euridice in Monteverdi’s The Tale of Orpheus, and Lucia in The Rape of Lucretia. She has received two career grants from the Opera Theatre’s Richard Gaddes Fund for Opera Singers. Her upcoming performances include debuts with Los Angeles Opera as Fortuna in L’incoronazione di Poppea and with Opera Pacific as Papagena in Die Zauberflöte and as Gianetta in L’elisir d’amore. Jennifer Roderer Théodorine Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Roderer appears this fall as the Witch in Hansel and Gretel at New York City Opera, where she also sang in Patience, Platée, Lysistrata, Dead Man Walking, and The Magic Flute, and in Little Women in City Opera’s first tour to Japan. She recently debuted at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires as Fricka in Die Walküre, and has sung with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Opera Pacific, and Teatro Grattacielo, and with the San Francisco, Santa Fe, Seattle, Los Angeles, Washington, Virginia, Glimmerglass, and Toledo operas, and Opern Air Gars in Austria, in her European debut as Amneris in Aida. She has sung with the American Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Florida Orchestra, Los Angeles Master Chorale, and Berkshire Choral Festival, and the New Jersey, Jacksonville, Anchorage, and Pacific symphonies, and she sang Brahms’s Liebeslieder Waltzes with New York City Ballet in their nationally televised Balanchine Gala.
James Schaffner Ké-Ki-Ka-Ko, Hermosa James Schaffner’s recent performances include his return to New York City Opera as Mr. Sengupta/Khattam Shud in the world premiere of Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Mr. Erlanson in A Little Night Music for his debut with Los Angeles Opera, Ernesto in Don Pasquale for Lyric Opera of San Antonio, the title role in Candide for Opera Boston, Lord Reginald in The Music Cure for Opera Intimate at Lincoln Center, and as the tenor soloist in the South American premiere of The Haroun Songbook at the Teatro Santa Cruz in São Paulo. He has also performed with the Oklahoma Mozart Festival, Omaha Symphony, Abendmusik: Lincoln concert series in Nebraska, the choral societies of Richmond and Rockland County, and the National Symphony of Rio de Janeiro. Greg Ainsworth Ensemble Greg Ainsworth’s recent film credits include a short musical film written by director Ken Roht for the RipFest Film Festival, as well as the feature film The Notorious Bettie Page, directed by Mary Harron. His recent television credits include episodes of ER, The Comeback, and an upcoming episode of The Wire. His most recent stage credits include the musical What A Piece of Work Is Dan! at the York Theatre and his one-man show Still Waters in New York and Los Angeles. Ainsworth is a graduate of Baylor University and of the William Esper Studio. He lives in Los Angeles. Bonnie Borst Ensemble Soprano Bonnie Borst’s stage credits include Epimenides (Lambs Theatre), Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story and Grease (Downtown Cabaret), Godspell and It’s A Wonderful Life (Beef and Boards), and in a national tour of A Christmas Carol. She recently shot two television pilots in New York City. A song of Borst’s was featured in a recent Columbia Pictures film, Zathura. Kyle Fichtman Ensemble Tenor Kyle Fichtman studied music theater at the Hartt School. His credits include the role of Lieutenant Cable in South Pacific, Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance, and Pirelli in Sweeney Todd. He was in the national tour of Cats, and he was featured in the Festival of New Artists, a series of new musical staged readings at Goodspeed Musicals. Fichtman has worked with directors Michael Montel, Richard Stafford, Rob Ruggiero, Kirby Ward, Alan Rust, and Henry Fonte. Liz Griffith Ensemble Liz Griffith’s recent credits include Bombalurina in Cats, dance captain and ensemble member in Aida, and Kit Kat Girl (and understudy for Sally) in Cabaret, all at the
Gateway Playhouse. She also appeared in the pre-Broadway workshop of Kristina, a new musical by ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus; she will be part of the production’s cast on Broadway in 2007. Griffith’s favorite roles include the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods, the title role in Sylvia, Sheep #1 in Candide, and Louise in Gypsy. She has a bachelor of fine arts degree in musical theater from the University of Michigan. Jamison Hebert Ensemble A native Californian, Jamison is happy to be making his East Coast debut in Offenbach!!! at SummerScape. Raised in the rural San Joaquin Valley, Hebert now lives and works in southern California. His recent appearances include A Picture of Dorian Gray at the Theatre @ Boston Court, The Caucasian Chalk Circle at South Coast Repertory, and several works directed by Ken Roht, including Echo’s Hammer, and the annual 99 Cent Only Store show at the Evidence Room in Los Angeles. Leslie Klug Ensemble Leslie Klug was recently seen in New York as Eliza Poe in Poe: A Musical. She was also in the original Off-Broadway cast of the celebrated Boozy: The Life, Death and Subsequent Vilification of Le Corbusier and, More Importantly, Robert Moses at the Culture Project. Klug’s other New York credits include the U.S. premiere of Caryl Churchill’s Far Away (New York Theater Workshop), Chicks with Dicks (Kraine), and, as Blanche Ingram, Jane Eyre (Wings). She has been seen regionally at Goodspeed Musicals, Alley Theater, Cain Park, and Mount Washington Valley Theater. She is also a commercial voiceover artist. She is a graduate of Yale University. Jason Martin Ensemble Jason Martin recently performed in the revival of Dionysus in 69, which was produced by Richard Schechner at the Performing Garage in New York City. His other New York Credits include The Refuseniks (Segal Theatre), You Again (New York Fringe Festival), The Territory (West End Theatre), and Ladyhouse Blues (Linhart Theater). His regional credits include The Mikado and Yeomen of the Guard (Mock’s Crest Productions) and After the Fall (Edinburgh Fringe Festival). Martin’s film credits include Brothers, which will be featured in the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival in November. He has a degree in music and theater from Pepperdine University. Natalie Ross Ensemble Soprano Natalie Ross was most recently seen in the 25th anniversary North American tour of Evita, directed by Hal Prince. Her other recent credits include the European tour of Evita, The Mikado at City Center with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players, and performances with Sacramento Music Circus and Weston Playhouse. Ross is originally from Detroit; she is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
