Meet our colleagues

William Davies

Graduate Surveyor

I joined Fisher German in Summer 2020, working as part of the Infrastructure Services division located at the Bedford office. Previously, I undertook two summer placements at the Fisher German’s Market Harborough and Ashby offices which provided an excellent insight into the business and experience of the wider surveying industry.

My day-to-day work involves liaising with a diverse range of stakeholders to deliver solutions on behalf of a wide range of utility clients. This typically includes engaging with affected parties to discuss planned works, arranging access, and negotiating compensation following completion. By providing this broad range of work, and actively promoting engagement across all levels of the business, I have found that Fisher German provide a number of excellent opportunities to their graduates including exceptional support through the APC process.

Having stemmed from farming roots, a career in the rural profession has always been an aspiration of mine. I completed an RICS accredited degree at Harper Adams University in Summer 2020 and began my graduate role at Fisher German’s Market Harborough office shortly after. My role comprises a variety of rural professional work, but mainly involves the day-to-day management of several mixed portfolio estates across Leicestershire and its surrounding counties. Typical tasks include dealing with residential, agricultural and commercial tenancy matters, managing property improvements, inspections and re-lettings, undertaking rent reviews, organising refurbishments and maintaining statutory compliance.

Fisher German have a designated graduate team who guide you through the APC process and offer individual guidance and support as needed. The structured training programme offers regular progress meetings with your APC mentor, counsellor and doctors. Speaking from personal experience, they have gone above and beyond to ensure I am in the best position possible to succeed and develop professionally.

Placement Student

I started my placement with Fisher German in September 2020 and have absolutely loved my experience so far. My team made me feel so welcome, even whilst working apart from many of them due to COVID-19. I feel my placement has really helped me put what I have learned in a classroom at university in to practice, an experience I think is really going to benefit me going into the final year of my degree.

Day-to-day I work mainly for one client, Exolum Pipeline Systems Ltd, who own and operate a 2000km network of oil pipelines. It has been a learning curve as this is a sector I had absolutely no experience with before starting, however I am really enjoying the challenge. I particularly enjoy meeting all of the landowners and seeing work which I have done in the office be put into practice.

The interviews that I attended with Fisher German were conducted by some of the most senior partners, including the managing partner, which further highlighted their commitment to finding the right people even at such an early stage of the career path.

I now work as a graduate rural surveyor in the Bedford office. Day-to-day work consists of managing an estate in the local area, comprising of houses, offices and farms. I am also involved in valuing properties and other advisory matters. I studied Biology at the University of Exeter and I am therefore currently completing a Masters course to enable me to qualify as a surveyor via the usual APC route. The graduate programme is certainly comprehensive and enjoyable, and allows for flexibility, which is a bonus when completing the Masters alongside.
