Army veteran Jose Antommarchi García and his wife, Rosa, had no idea they were about to embark on a long journey far from their rural home in the American territory of Puerto Rico until doctors at the VA there found a rare form of cancer in Jose. Jose and Rosa traveled from their home on the tropical island to the VA Medical Center at Hines, Illinois for specialized care during the COVID pandemic. The Cold War vet and his wife said that the Fisher House there made it much easier to focus on each other, on fighting cancer, and on recovery.
For more than 30 years, Fisher Houses have helped military and veteran families stay together during the most difficult times by providing a home away from home, at no cost, while loved ones receive medical care at military and VA medical centers around the world.

Fisher House Foundation is best known for its network of 92 comfort homes where military and veteran families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. Located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide and around the world, Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites with private bedrooms and baths, and offer a common kitchen area, warm dining room, laundry facilities, and inviting living room for guest families to share.
Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles program, which uses donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedsides
The extensive use of medical centers by veterans and service members is why Fisher Houses are essential. Fisher Houses relieve the burden of costly hotel stays on families and allow them to focus on what is really important: being there for loved ones when they need it most
