FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Resident, I’m not sure about you, but the Fishers Parks & Recreation team feels like we blinked and now it’s 2017! As we embark on a new year, we have to pause for a second and celebrate record attendance of our programs and events over the last year. Your patronage of our recreation programs, community-wide and inaugural events truly created a sense of place in our community. In 2017, we’ll look forward to continuing creating special traditions for your families, year-round. This spring, we encourage you to get outside! Typically a busy testing time in our school system, spring months offer opportunities to watch our natural environment come back to life. Our diverse programs offer opportunities for your child to

Alongside roughly 1,000 parks and recreation departments across the country, we’ll be encouraging children to get active and healthy. We encourage you to connect with us on social media and to check out our section in Think Fishers for additional information about our farmers markets, now running during winter and summer

Volunteer Spotlight Join forces with local businesses and residents to leave a lasting impact on our community! Keep Fishers Beautiful (KFB) is Fishers’ largest, community-wide volunteer event and returns on April 15th, 2017. KFB includes opportunities to participate in the 13th annual Spring Service Day at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve, to partner with residents to lend a hand to those in need during the Neighborhood Blitz, and to complete other beautification projects in our local parks. Keep Fishers Beautiful is rain or shine, and we encourage volunteers to wear clothing that can get dirty and closed toed shoes. Volunteers are welcome to participate as individuals or with a group! All supplies will be provided by our team, and our staff is happy to sign off on any volunteer hours completed by local students, organizations, scouts or athletes! Please contact Dan at domsicd@ fishers.in.us to confirm your individual or group registration for participation in the Neighborhood Blitz or at a local park by March 6. This spring as the natural environment comes back to life, we don’t want you to watch from the sidelines! With a variety of parks, we’ve created one that invites your family to dive into the dirt and start exploring. Now, not every Fishers Parks invites your child to dive in and start exploring. Our community is home to Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve, a protected area where we ask guests not to touch, move or remove anything. But, at Flat Fork Creek Park we invite you to dive right in and start engaging! Book mark the Fun Guide on your mobile device or jot these questions in a notebook so you can engage your children in nature education, while enjoying an outdoor adventure! Remember, if any questions arise that you don’t know the answer to, you can always tweet me at @RitcheyWoods and I’ll do my best to find or provide an answer. Here are a few prompts for your children: Q: Do you know the difference between dirt and soil? A: Dirt is just one ingredient in the soil. Soil is actually an amazing, living system that supports life. Q: What is dirt? A: Dirt is the very small particles of rock found in soil. Dirt comes in three sizes: sand, silt and clay. Q: What gives soil it’s earthy smell? A: You’re actually smelling microorganisms! There are more microorganisms in a teaspoon of soil than there are people on Danesa Stolz
the earth!
Chief Naturalist Q: What does a microorganism do? A: Microorganisms serve many roles! They decompose organic matter, provide nitrogen for plants through fixation, detoxify harmful chemicals, suppress disease organisms and are the source of most of the antibiotic medicines we use to fight diseases. They also give soil its odor! Did you know: Soil is a natural antidepressant. By smelling soil, your body is triggered to produce serotonin which causes you to relax and be happy! So next time you’re having a tough day, or feel a little overwhelmed with life, head out to a park and stop to smell the soil!
Land, then, is not merely soil; it is a fountain of energy flowing through a circuit of soils, plants, and animals. Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac, 1949 Our vision is to heighten awareness for the natural environment, encourage lifelong learning in natural and cultural history, allow opportunities for outdoor recreation, maintain habitat diversity and instill a sense of stewardship for all living things.
