MAY - AUGUST 2017

Fishers resident muddling through Mud Day 2016

FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Resident, The summer is nearly upon us and Fishers Parks & Recreation is excited for its most ambitious season yet! Summer is a great time to unplug and explore what Parks has to offer. Fishers newly revamped Farmers’ Market. Concerts at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. Jaws at Saxony Beach. Blast on the Bridge at Geist. Summer Camp at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve. These are just a few of the fun, engaging opportunities at Fishers Parks this summer. July is National Parks and Recreation Month, and the National Recreation and Park Association’s (NRPA) tagline this year is “Get Your Play On!” Be sure to check out the Fun Guide listings for a range of awesome ways to play this summer! Beyond programs and events, explore Fishers’ 24 park properties this summer. Our diverse park properties provide options for

ENVIRONMENT IT'S TIME TO GET OUT AND UNPLUG! The City of Fishers Parks & Recreation Department has a desire to see Fishers residents “unplugged.” Studies show that Americans spend an average of 10 hours a day on digital media, 8 hours sleeping and a total of 5 hours a day at work or school (not spent on a device), commuting, eating, completing household activities, shopping, caring for family, and civic and religious activities. That leaves an hour: what are you doing in that hour? Studies also show many benefits to being outside and getting away from technology: it decreases depression, allows for fewer sleep disturbances, raises Vitamin D levels, improves vision, and increases energy and much more. We have so many ways for you to unplug this summer. Join us for: Father Son Adventure on June 16, Monsoon Madness on June 17, Mud Day on July 8, Community Campout on July 29 and National S’mores Day on August 6, just to name a few! We have also created a brand new initiative called Second Nature. We will offer backpacks to check out and activities to help you engage in meaningful ways with nature on your own time. Second nature is a characteristic or habit in someone that appears to be instinctive because that person has behaved in a particular way so often. Spending time in nature should be second nature! Take some time to explore the Fun Guide for details, times and instructions on how to register for many of our programs designed Danesa Stolz

to help you unplug. Visit our website to learn more about Second
