THINK FISHERS: FISHERS PARKS & RECREATION SPOTLIGHT

THE WINTER FARMERS’ MARKET During winters’ long dreary days, there’s a bright spot on Fishers’ west side every Saturday morning as over 28 carefully juried vendors set up shop at the Fishers Winter Farmers’ Market inside the Holland Park building (1 Park Drive) from 9 a.m. to noon with a mission and passion to help customers find fresh and local food throughout the year. A tale of true entrepreneurial spirit, the Fishers Farmers’ Market, proudly features only Indiana-grown vendors, so all produce, baked goods, and prepared foods are locally grown and sourced in state. These entrepreneurial roots infuse the Winter Farmers’ Market, now in its third season, with stories of humble beginnings, hard work, and a sense of community. “Almost everything we do is with hand tools, so it’s a lot of labor but a lot of fun” said Zach Brown, owner of Grace and Truth Farms, which specializes in certified naturally grown and organic vegetables, fruits, chicken, pork, beef, and eggs. The farm was also a popular vendor at the summer Fishers Farmers’ Market. The small, family-run farm, located in Rossville, Indiana, got its start in a most unexpected way. “I was listening to a podcast about a guy growing vegetables and thought, ‘I could do that!’. I have always had a garden, so we just made the garden bigger!” said Brown. That led him to watch a YouTube video to learn more about farming, and the rest is history. The vendors and customers who frequent the market also instill a sense of local pride which steeps into the community as whole. “Even when it’s raining, you still get people coming out who are dedicated to buying local and being a part of the local movement. It really makes a big difference in the community,” said Jacob Baird, owner of Groomsville Popcorn based in Tipton County and a winter market vendor who also participated in this year’s summer market. Shoppers can check out playfishers.com/FarmersMarket to learn more about these and other Winter Farmers’ Market vendors, and follow the Fishers Farmers’ Market on Facebook and Instagram for special promotions, deals, and updates throughout the season.

Our vendors love to answer questions and chat with customers during this indoor market.

ENJOY SOME ECOTHERAPY Sometimes, all you need is a little ecotherapy during those long, dreary days. While most people tend to hibernate indoors during the winter, there’s ample health benefits to enjoying nature during the colder months. From staying active and getting the blood flowing, to decreasing stress and the beating the winter blues, a hike in the brisk air or a trip to a park can do wonders for your mental, physical, emotional health. Head to playfishers.com to explore parks and trail maps and plan your next winter adventure. PRO-TIP: Danesa Stolz, Fishers Parks & Recreation’s Chief Naturalist, shares her favorite winter ecotherapy tip: “I love being out in the woods on a sunny day after a fresh fallen snow. My mind is energized with colors that are brilliant with amazing contrast, and my soul is renewed by the sounds of nature that are so vibrant, crisp, and peaceful.”
