MAYOR’S LETTER Entrepreneurship is a value we hold closely within City Hall. While not everyone will own their own business or pursue entrepreneurship we can all have an entrepreneurial mindset that challenges us to think creatively, challenge the status quo, seek innovative solutions and learn from our failures as well as our successes. As an “entrepreneurial city”, we work to maintain a climate that allows good ideas to grow and flourish, where individuals or companies can obtain new levels of success. We celebrate entrepreneurship of all shapes and sizes. From the startup, high-growth, high-potential enterprises in operation at Launch Fishers to the food truck operator or local boutique owner, all roads lead to organic economic growth and development in our community. In this issue, you’ll learn about a few small business owners in the Nickel Plate District who channeled their passion and purpose into entrepreneurial endeavors and found success. You’ll also meet three student entrepreneurs who prove that entrepreneurship is not an adults-only endeavor. As you begin your holiday shopping this month, remember to support the many small businesses throughout our community. In order for entrepreneurs to be successful, their community must support them – not just with their words, but with their dollars.

Yours in service, Mayor Scott Fadness

Schools Introduce E-Newsletter

Extends Thanks to Community November is a special time to express gratitude for all the gifts and blessings afforded to us as families and residents of Fishers, IN and Hamilton Southeastern Schools. Allow us to extend our thanks to all of our teachers, staff members, families and supporters. The start of the 2015-2016 school year has been a phenomenal one. We love being your Hamilton Southeastern Schools. Serving students, who are among the best and brightest in the state and country, is a privilege.

Our community is resilient and strong. Hamilton Southeastern Schools has a reputation of embracing growth in a manner that makes the City of Fishers one of the most outstanding places to live within the state and across the country. We have much to be thankful for this holiday season and more to look forward to in 2016.

Happy Thanksgiving!

As you come together for Thanksgiving, take moments to reconnect with loved ones and friends. Allow this time of celebration to reaffirm the values and traditions that you hold dear. Hamilton Southeastern Schools also invites you to share in the premiere of our e-newsletter Come Together. Visit tinyurl.com/ntn823h to read the issue or scan the QR Code in the next column. The link also may be plugged/typed into your web browser. We are very proud to showcase the honor, scholarship and educational excellence of our schools. HSE Schools also is fortunate to be the second largest employer in Hamilton County. In fact, many parents have chosen to live and work in Fishers, IN because of the high quality of education. For this, we are truly grateful and continue to challenge ourselves to advance the level of engagement and achievement of our students. To that end, HSE Schools is on a listening tour at this time, making contact with every faculty and every PTO in this school district as well making plans to meet with Home Owners Associations and community groups. The purpose of the tour is simple‌to make sure we hear what you have to say. In January, the school board will consider the amount of the referendum levy to be requested. It is expected that the operating referendum will appear on the May ballot. If HSE Schools is to recommend a referendum levy amount for the HSE School Board to approve, it is very important that the community had a voice in the plans.

Planning your Holiday Shopping Strategy?

Think Fishers First

Saturday, Nov. 28

Have you started your Christmas shopping? Before you get too far along, consider the benefits of spending your shopping dollars within your own community. Fishers is a vibrant city, filled with diverse options for goods and services. This holiday season, as you’re shopping for a variety of different gifts, think Fishers first. When you choose to support local businesses, you reinvest in your own community. Each dollar spent at a local business generates three times more wealth to the local economy than a chain retailer. Additionally, local businesses donate more than two times as much sales revenue per dollar to local non-profits, events and teams compared to chain retailers. While big-box retailers deliver unbeatable deals on hot ticket items during the holiday season, local businesses offer unique products crafted by local entrepreneurs and artisans. It’s our local businesses that give our community its distinct personality. This holiday season, we’ve teamed up with local businesses for Shop Fishers, a local shopping extravaganza. On Saturday, Nov. 28, local businesses throughout the city will offer special deals throughout the day. To learn more about participating businesses and the deals they’ll offer, visit www.fishers.in.us/ShopFishers. Download the Nickel Plate District Fishers App and enable push notifications for reminders about Shop Fishers and deals taking place during the event. While Shop Fishers is a great time to discover the offerings of our local businesses, we encourage you to shop local as often as you can. Think Fishers first. 4

LIST Meet three student entrepreneurs already making strides with their own business ideas. Maddy Corbin Maddy Corbin might be a serial entrepreneur in the making. Corbin’s first startup Luxury 45, a line of homemade organic bath and body products, gained popularity in Fishers as they were on the shelves of three local boutiques and also sold online. Recently, she’s shifted her focus to her own photography business, Wisconsin & Gold. She has an impressive portfolio of creative photo shoots, including high school seniors, couples, portraits and businesses. She calls starting the new company one of the best decisions she’s made. You can check her work out online at www.wisconsinandgold.com or on Instagram @wisconsinandgold.

Jake Dufinetz Jake Dufinetz got a crash course in entrepreneurship after landing an internship with Launch Fishers through the Launch Fishers’ High School fellowship program. “The internship at Launch Fishers allowed me to see the people that have put everything on the line because they believe in their idea,” Jake said. “I hope to follow in their footsteps one day.”

Nancy Ni Another Launch Fishers High School fellow, HSE senior Nancy Ni spent the summer learning from the folks at LumenCache. “Everyone at Launch has taught me to celebrate my failures, look and think forward, and just have fun,” Nancy said. “I want to spread the entrepreneurial spirit. At Launch, I found similar qualities in all the members. Everyone wanted to share stories, ideas and people. I want to bring that spirit to wherever it is I go or whatever it is I do.”

The Midwest? Fishers, Indiana? Are you crazy? By Anderson Schoenrock

CEO & Chief Entrepreneur of Memory Ventures

In the summer of 2014, I embarked on a journey to find the new home of Memory Ventures, a company I started in California in 2007. By our seventh year in business, we had grown rapidly and employed more than 40 people. We had been recognized as the 8th fastest growing company in Los Angeles and one of the fastest growing companies in America. It was with that context that some of my closest friends and advisors told me I was absolutely nuts to attempt to relocate of our business across the country. It was with the same vigorous energy that I set out to find our new home and move our business out of California. While I knew it would not be easy, I could not shake a strong feeling that our business would struggle to achieve its full potential in the high cost environment of California. As a native of Kansas, I had a positive bias towards the Midwest and everything it has to offer. I believe the exceptional quality of life, attractive cost of living and good Midwestern work ethic uniquely positions these “fly-over states” to see growth that outpaces the coast in the coming years. Not only was this dynamic key for Memory Ventures, but also incredibly attractive to me as a serial entrepreneur. In short, I believe we are on the front end of a wave that some have called “The Rise of the Rest”, where we will see entrepreneurial talent, business and capital growth in the Midwest at a rate that outpaces the expensive and saturated coastal markets. To secure our new location, I spent two months over the summer of 2014 crisscrossing the Midwest. On my first visit to Fishers, we did a driving tour, stood on the steps of town (now city) hall to hear the vision of the Nickel Plate District, visited Launch Fishers and, much to the chagrin of the state and Fishers team, participated in an impromptu 6

Town Talk NOVEMBER 2015

bike ride of downtown initiated by John Wechsler (the OG of entrepreneurship in Fishers). The following day we canceled meetings in Indianapolis to come back to Fishers to meet with Mayor Fadness to hear his vision for a smart, vibrant and entrepreneurial community. It was clear to me within the first 24 hours of visiting Fishers that this was the place for Memory Ventures. I am incredibly honored and excited to be part of the team helping to build the Fishers 2040 comprehensive plan. What I love is that developing a plan to guide this city for the next 25 years is a bold and audacious goal. I applaud the city leaders for not shying away from developing a comprehensive plan because it will be hard and I am convinced that this will leave our community well-positioned to the benefit of current and future residents. For many that have lived during the last 25 years the growth has, rightfully so, been nothing short of mindboggling. Yet, we live in a time where innovation and technology are not only constantly influencing the way we live and do business, but also the pace of this innovation is accelerating. The result is that more will happen and change in our world in the next 25 years than happened in the last 25 years. Having looked at communities all over the Midwest and lived on both coasts, I can say that what is happening here is incredibly unique and special. I expect to look back 25 years from now and realize this was just the beginning of the amazing things happening in Fishers. So, while my friends in California may send me photos from the beach in February and tell me that I was crazy to leave, in my mind it is clear that I would have been crazy to stay. #EngageFishers with @FishersDan

By Dan Domsic

You might not be able to guess what Bluebridge, Star Financial Bank, and Bubba’s 33, three very different businesses, have in common. The common thread? They all, at one point or another, volunteered with the City of Fishers. Requests for service projects are not rare for city staff, but lining up a need, staff, and the availability of an interested company can prove to be a challenging opportunity. It is rewarding when all of these aspects line up, and we get volunteers out in our parks or community at large to get their hands dirty. So, if you’re with a business looking to volunteer with Fishers Parks & Recreation and/or Public Works, what do you need to know? • The more notice, the better. If your business wants to schedule a volunteer opportunity, advanced notice greatly increases our ability to get your team in the field. • Just how much your team wants to get their hands dirty.

There are all kinds of volunteer opportunities, and not every volunteer likes to do the same thing. Knowing if the team is interested in everything from painting to trail rehab up front – and how many people are part of the group – makes planning easy. • There are event-based volunteer opportunities. Fishers Parks & Recreation has a ton of events throughout the year that can use volunteer muscle, and if your company is willing to work outside the business day, these are good opportunities to be a part of a community tradition. Our biggest volunteer day of the year, Keep Fishers Beautiful and Spring Service Day, takes place on a Saturday. You can get more information on these initiatives by signing up for our volunteer newsletter or filling out a volunteer application at www.fishers.in.us/volunteer. If interested in company or group volunteerism, fill out a group volunteer application at www.fishers.in.us/ volunteer. The application poses specific questions along the lines of the above themes and more. After that, we’ll see if we can make this thread more common.

Check it out: Jingle Jamboree Visit the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, 6 Municipal Drive, on December 4 for our holiday tree lighting, a live ice carving demonstration, and a ton more from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, visit the community calendar at www.fishers.in.us.

Dan Domsic is the Community Engagement & Volunteer Coordinator for Fishers Parks & Recreation. For more information on any of these ideas, feel free to reach me at domsicd@fishers.in.us or in the office at 595-3151.

from Homegrown benefit Fishers’ focus on Businesses entrepreneurship By Andrea Davis

City leaders’ efforts to develop an entrepreneurial hub in Fishers have drawn headlines in recent years—including in July when fast-growing tech firm CloudOne announced it would move its global headquarters to The Switch, the $28 million mixeduse project at 8626 E. 116th St. CEO John McDonald says the company “just had to be part of” a community being built around the idea of high-tech, high-growth entrepreneurship, but he also credits the lesser-known enterprises that give the Nickel Plate District its flair. “Walkable dining, exercise, concerts, apartments — this stuff is so critical to the technical talent we’re looking to land and retain,” McDonald said in a lateOctober email. CloudOne plans to add more than 60 positions to its existing workforce by 2019, mostly millennials with freshly minted degrees. “It’s frankly the lifestyle I wish I could have had when I graduated from college.” Across 116th Street from The Switch, behind the retrofitted barn that houses Thai Sushi House and Source Yoga Center, personal trainer Mike Lewkowicz fulfilled his entrepreneurial dream when he opened 1 & Only Fitness with a business partner in 2014.

Town Talk NOVEMBER 2015

He was drawn by the vision Mayor Scott Fadness and others painted of an attractive, vibrant, pedestrianfriendly downtown that would appeal to businesses and residents alike. It seemed like the ideal location for a gym that “embodies the spirit of community.” Unlike many large fitness chains that focus on volume, 1 & Only Fitness takes a personalized approach to exercise and nutrition. All the trainers are engaged and supportive, working individually with members at every fitness level to develop healthy habits one at a time. It’s a strategy he and partner Mike Melloh know works— Lewkowicz used it to help Melloh lose 70 pounds in 2013, growing their trainerclient relationship into a solid friendship in the process. They joined forces to open 1 & Only Fitness.

Roman & Leo, the boys-only clothing boutique, opened in June 2014

Lewkowicz took the leap into business ownership after 11 years of self-employment, working as an independent contractor at other gyms as well as from the fitness facility in his apartment complex. Melloh kept his day job as vice president of human resources at a large company in Indianapolis, but he’s still at the gym helping out six days a week. A year and a half after launching the enterprise, Lewkowicz said he can’t imagine locating 1 & Only Fitness anywhere else. He recently moved into an apartment at The Depot at Nickel Plate, the luxury mixed-use project that started the wave of downtown redevelopment, and said there’s already plenty of reasons to explore the Nickel Plate District. “It’s the perfect setup, demographically and geographically,” he said. “And there’s a lot of cool stuff going on” such as concerts at other special events at the city-owned amphitheater nearby. Homegrown retail tenants in The Depot include Dottie Couture Boutique, Yogurtz and the newly opened Flamme Burger. Many small businesses found space in existing buildings along 116th Street and the vicinity, and others including Four Day Ray Brewing are building their own facilities in the area.

Just west of the Nickel Plate District railroad crossing—and a newly improved crosswalk at 116th Street and Municipal Drive—Angela Castelli is putting her sales and marketing experience to the test at Roman & Leo, the boys-only clothing boutique she debuted in June 2014. Named for her sons Roman, 5, and Leo, who will be 3 next month, the shop sells trendy fashions and accessories for little guys. (Think skinny jeans, knit beanies, and shirts that aren’t adorned with fire trucks or sports balls.) Castelli worked as a state account manager for Godiva Chocolates before striking out on her own at her husband Justin’s urging. Opening an all-boys store was a “pie-in-the-sky, if I could do anything dream,” she said, prompted by the difficulty she had finding somewhere to buy clothes she liked for her boys. She found the styles and brands she was looking for online, and got so many compliments on—and inquiries about—the boys’ stylish apparel that she knew she was onto something.

Sure Shot Coffee is located in Vardagen, a hip apparel and skateboard shop.

“So many people, especially in Hamilton County, are willing and want to dress their kids differently, but no one locally catered to little boys,” Castelli said. “So I decided to open a little store. ... I knew it would either be a big, huge flop or really successful.”

Indeed, she and other downtown business owners said they have noticed more pedestrians taking to the streets during warm weather, checking out local restaurants and shops along with the ongoing construction projects.

Business has been strong so far, despite the narrow niche. Castelli said she hasn’t been tempted to add girls’ clothes, even though that would be a much bigger market, because she wants to stick with what she knows—and offer something her customers can’t get somewhere else. That is the essence of entrepreneurship, after all.

“More people are starting to notice what’s here,” she said.

“I like having a very specialized niche that I’m passionate about,” she said. “I wanted to create something different.” Castelli is leasing a small storefront at 8664 E. 116th St., between the Nickel Plate Bar & Grill and Fishers Barbershop. The single-story concrete block structure has more character than a mall store or retail strip, she said, and the location in the heart of the growing downtown is ideal. “Knowing what was coming to the area was very appealing,” said Castelli, who lives in southeast Fishers with her family and never considered locating her business elsewhere. “It’s nice to have that community feel.” 10

Town Talk NOVEMBER 2015

Two doors down at hip apparel (and skateboard) purveyor Vardagen, owner Jared Ingold got tired of waiting for someone else to open a local coffee shop, so he launched a Kickstarter campaign in May to pay startup expenses for Sure Shot Coffee, a traditional Italian espresso bar. “Coffee’s such a great way to build community and enhance culture,” Ingold said in his Kickstarter video. Dozens of donors—including longtime Fishers business Reynolds Farm Equipment—met the $8,000 goal in five days. Sure Shot opened inside Vardagen in July. The fresh-roasted coffee comes from Brickhouse Coffee Roasters in Indianapolis, Ingold said on the video.

IT consulting firm Impact Solutions does business at 11580 Moore St., just off 116th Street behind Tilly’s Tea Room. President David Girot started the business in his Fishers home eight years ago, then occupied several different spaces at Yeager Properties’ Fishers Office Suites before moving to its current location about two years ago. The company purchased the 800-square-foot building in September.

Although Girot’s decision to locate his business downtown predated the city’s recent economic development efforts, he acknowledges the impact it has made in the Nickel Plate District. McDonald, the CloudOne CEO, said Fishers’ wide-ranging approach to nurturing entrepreneurship distinguishes it from other communities who pay lip service to innovation.

Girot was interested in expanding the facility, since it’s already too small for his staff of 13, but he said the new Nickel Plate District design guidelines make such a project too costly. So he’s talking to city economic development officials about other ways to keep the business in Fishers, where he lives.

“Every city is eager to have high-growth technology companies, and some often put their money where their mouth is and seed development and ‘campuses’ for technology,” he said. “But the Fishers vision is so much broader, from Launch Fishers to a portfolio of real estate that we can grow into, to partnership with the school system to encourage entrepreneurship and high achievement, to involving business leaders in the growth plans of the city itself.

In the meantime, he’s investing in exterior improvements—including a new Impact Solutions sign—to boost awareness among the thousands of potential clients and employees who pass by each day. “We might get a call,” he said. “This is our demographic in Fishers.”

“There are so many other things, too, but together they are demonstrative of a city wanting to make entrepreneurship part of the very fabric of the community, and a defining mark of who they are. No other city in Indiana, and I would venture probably the Midwest, is so focused on this mission.”

Snow Prep Fishers DPW plans year round for winter weather. Their meticulous preparations allow them to consistently exceed national service averages for snow clearing. Throughout the season, 57 trucks run 24 hours a day. The department’s prioritization for road clearing is primary roads, including 116th Street, 96th Street and Allisonville Road, followed by secondary roads such as Hoosier Road, Hague Road, Lantern Road, 121st Street and Brooks School Road followed by subdivision streets and cul-de-sacs. Follow @FishersDPW on Twitter for updates on their efforts throughout the season.

Fishers & IAA Develop Partnership Late last month, Fishers City Council approved a memorandum of understanding that solidifies a partnership between the City and the Indianapolis Airport Authority to attract development to between 200-300 acres of non-aviation land at the Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport in Fishers. Fishers will begin work on a master plan for the area yet this year.
