RESOURCES MAYOR FADNESS LETTER TO RESIDENTS

Welcome to our new quarterly format for Think Fishers. Noting our great partners at TownePost Network, Current in Fishers, and Larry in Fishers, we’ve decided to take a different direction with the City’s monthly magazine. Of course, we’re saving resources by switching to a quarterly format, but the benefit lies in sharing a different side of Fishers, allowing time to dive deeper into what makes our city uniquely Fishers. As always, you can connect with us 24/7 via social media or by signing up for our email updates at fishers.in.us/Connect.

August marks the beginning of the long-awaited State Road 37 Improvement Project, a multiyear joint project between the City of Fishers, Hamilton County, and INDOT to improve safety and traffic flow on the major corridor. In June, the City of Fishers and Hamilton County launched its campaign to encourage residents and visitors alike to support businesses along SR37 during construction, 37Thrives. The campaign will feature stories of the businesses along the route, including local business owners, discounts and promotions, and routes to access your favorite restaurants and stores.

ABOUT THE SR37 PROJECT:

The SR37 Improvement Project improves three main challenges: 131st Street & SR37

• ALLEVIATES TRAFFIC CONGESTION • Improving traffic flow along State Road 37 impacts the time drivers spend waiting

at traffic signals. • Improving traffic congestion directly impacts secondary back-ups on the east and

west streets. • Improving the overall experience on 37 impacts the quality and future growth of

the corridor.

• ENHANCES BUSINESSES • Improving the infrastructure of SR37 impacts businesses by keeping drivers on this

connected highway • Improving traffic flow improves the accessibility to local businesses • Improving the driving experience on SR37 attracts and impacts new customers for

135th Street & SR37

local business

• INCREASES EFFICIENCY & SAFETY • Improving bicycle/pedestrian mobility impacts a modern, mixed-transit community • Improving intersections by reducing traffic signals along the north-south route is proven

to reduce serious accidents • Improving overall roadway infrastructure impacts security and safety for all drivers

BREAKDOWN BY INTERSECTION:

State Road 37 will always remain open to through traffic, with some lane restrictions occuring throughout the project. All timelines listed below are subject to change. Visit driveSR37.com or follow @DriveFishers on Twitter for the latest updates.

On May 22, Mayor Scott Fadness delivered his fifth State of the City Address to a packed room of over 700 residents and stakeholders. Taking on an unconventional format, Mayor Fadness welcomed key members of City of Fishers staff and Fishers leaders to share the spotlight while describing their efforts to contribute to the City’s accomplishments for the last year before sharing his vision for the next four years of his administration. Mayor Fadness began his annual address by sharing the evolution of cities and towns from agrarian economies to industrial economies to 21st-century, people-centric economies. “Today, cities do not exist or thrive because of their proximity to farms or their distance to natural resources, but they exist to create an experience and quality of life that supports the most precious natural resource of all, people,” said Mayor Fadness. “To compete in today’s economy, we must invest in people. And like with any natural resource, it is critical that we continually evaluate the health of that resource to ensure long term sustainability.”

Several rankings were noted throughout the presentation that highlighted the realities of today’s population, noting Indiana ranks in the bottom percentile when it comes to overall health, mental health, smoking, higher education, quality of life, and the natural environment. “Changing the trajectory of our people’s quality of life can seem daunting for a community, but if we collaborate as a region, I believe we have the opportunity to grow our way out of our problems,” remarked Fadness. “Companies and talented people are comparing metropolitan areas when deciding to locate. Right now, we will not win the race in the long run.” Mayor Fadness unveiled two regional collaboration solutions that currently underway, aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability:

REGIONAL INVESTMENT HUBS During the 2019 Indiana Legislative Session, Mayor Fadness, on behalf of Accelerating Indiana Municipalities (AIM), advocated for Regional Investment Hubs. Regional Investment Hubs establish a mechanism for any region in Indiana to raise local revenue on a sustainable, ongoing basis to fund transformative capital projects. The legislation did not pass the 2019 Session but has been assigned to a Summer Study Committee for further consideration.

NIBIN PARTNERSHIP WITH IMPD In January 2019, in collaboration with IMPD, the Fishers Police Department began registering confiscated firearms and ballistic materials in a database that tracks ballistic and DNA evidence for every firearm and bullet collected in Indianapolis. As a result of this collaboration, of the 13 firearms or shell casings confiscated in Fishers since January, nine of them have been connected to a violent crime that occurred in Indianapolis. Fishers Police Department hosted over 100 law enforcement officers across Hamilton County for training on the NIBIN database as a first step toward a regional approach to combating violent crimes.

TEACHERS LOOK TO CONTINUE CURIOCITY'S GROWTH BY OFFERING ADDITIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN STUDENTS AND STAFF

As the HSE District school year concluded, a few teachers began ramping up their efforts to continue to grow Curiocity, the online marketplace of hands-on learning experiences for students and teachers of Hamilton Southeastern Schools. The 2018-19 school year saw the launch of the pilot program for the new technology platform that gives teachers better access to community resources for immersive learning opportunities. With over 560 opportunities listed and nearly 300 organizations pledging time and effort to supporting the education of Fishers’ students, some teachers are going back to work as part of the City’s further investment in connecting more students and teachers to more businesses and organizations.

Community organizations will drive many of these experiential learning opportunities. This effort requires the participation of several community organizations, in all industries. The success of this effort will be in the belief that our students and community can find mutual benefit in such a remarkable vision. THOMPSON THRIFT RETAIL GROUP TO DEBUT THE YARD AT FISHERS DISTRICT THIS FALL Terre Haute-based Thompson Thrift is a prominent face in the Fishers community and a significant contributor to the extraordinary growth throughout the city. As managing partner for Thompson Thrift Retail Group (TTRG), a division of Thompson Thrift and the development company for Fishers District, Ashlee Boyd can attest to his company’s connection to the Fishers community. “Over the years our company has invested and been involved in many projects in Fishers, including a very complicated assemblage at 116th Street and Olio Road, a 104-acre site at 131st Street and State Road 37, and a 74-acre property at 106th Street and I-69,” noted Boyd. TTRG’s most anticipated project yet is Fishers District—a mixed-use development just west of Cumberland Road on 116th Street and IKEA Way. Perhaps the most unique culinary concept in Fishers District, and one that TTRG has shown great partnership in with the City, is the Fishers “I’m proud to be a Fishers resident and we knew this area was ready Test Kitchen.
