FISHERS BIZ SPOTLIGHT

with

NEXUS VALVE As part of the Business Spotlight series, Think Fishers sat down with Nexus Valve's President and CEO, Sean Kalman for an insider’s look at the local company. Think Fishers: Tell us the history behind Nexus Valve. Sean Kalman: Nexus’ founder was a manufacturing rep for several companies in the 1960’s which led to his own invention of a heating and cooling valve new to the industry. He created the design on the back of a cocktail napkin, flew to Italy to find a manufacturer to create the prototype, and at that point, Nexus Valve was created. Since day one, Nexus has been involved in the evolution of the heating and cooling industry through its product innovation. Nexus built their headquarters in 2011 in Fishers. TF: What do you love most about being in Fishers? SK: We like being part of the Fishers community and try to benefit the community in any way we can. Many of our employees live in Fishers and have ties to the community. Fishers has a great business environment that supports its growing businesses. Our new building is in the heart of the action in Fishers and makes it accessible for employees to grab lunch or enjoy many of the downtown amenities. TF: Speaking of, what’s your favorite Fishers lunch spot? SK: I think the place that is top of mind for me is The Ram. They have good food and service. Four Day Ray is also a great place to go and eat, especially on their new patio. I personally have a lot of guests come from overseas and I like to take them to Pure Eatery. The food is diverse and the changing artwork is unique. TF: What new, exciting things does Nexus Valve have coming up? SK: We're hiring! We are currently looking for a few qualified people to help with customer fulfillment. In 2018 we anticipate hiring a few more people to support new growth in areas of our business. It’s been great to see the growth the last few years in our company: in the last five years, we have gone from about fifty employees to seventy-five. TF: To us, Fishers is smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial. Which of those words can you or your business most identify with? Why? SK: I would say entrepreneurial for sure, that has always been our outlook. It has always been our thing to take an existing product, enhance it, make it better, and go conquer the world with it. I could argue that Nexus personifies all three, we do a lot of things with and for our employees to keep them engaged in what they are doing. For example, a couple of weeks ago we shut down for an afternoon and had a cook out. We set up a big barbeque out back we had volleyball, badminton, and ladder ball. General speaking, we set out to have a good time with one another.

The new culinary destination teases announcements on the horizon, feeds Fishers' vibrancy SEPTEMBER 2017

Fishers has something new coming: Gourmet cuisine, live entertainment, and endless opportunities for budding chefs. Late last year, the City announced a publicprivate partnership with Thompson Thrift to invest $40 million into the creation of a new culinary-hub, The Yard at Fishers District. The hub could have up to 14 restaurants, a hotel, retail shops and green space for concerts and wine tastings. “I have repeatedly heard our residents express a desire for more local food and entertainment options,” explained Mayor Fadness. “The investment in The Yard is a crucial component to attracting top talent and retaining a thriving entrepreneurial culture. I’m excited to welcome new chefs, cuisine, and entertainment options to Fishers.” With

BEFORE & AFTER: I-69 AND 116TH STREET The addition of The Yard at Fishers District is one of four developments currently underway along 116th Street east of I-69 to add to the vibrancy of the community. The City is anxiously awaiting the grand opening of Indiana’s first IKEA and Topgolf locations, slated to open later this October. Construction on Portillos’ is also underway with an anticipated opening in September. With commercial

traffic exiting east off of I-69. A right, turnonly lane is currently being construction from the I-69 Exit ramp (going east bound), that will run to Cumberland Road. This will ensure traffic continuing towards Hoosier Road will not be stalled by drivers needing to turn right (south) onto Cumberland Road. Real-time traffic signals will also help support traffic flow during AM/PM peak hours in an ongoing fashion as developments come online.

CITY UNVEILS 2018 BUDGET

INVESTMENTS IN COMMUNITY INCLUDE PUBLIC SAFETY, INFRASTRUCTURE, & RECREATION

This month, Mayor Fadness will present first draft of the 2018 budget to City Council. The total budget comes in at just over $90 million dollars with an anticipated $16 million dollars in cash reserves, and a $3 million dollar surplus over the 2017 budget. As the state’s only AAA bond-rated city, this year’s budget includes a strong commitment to investment in the community in the form

3 ADDITIONAL POLICE OFFICERS

of the city's public safety departments, infrastructure improvements, and personnel. The growth in Fishers over the past several decades has increased the demand for additional City personnel to support the safety and needs of Fishers residents. The City of Fishers remains dedicated to operating at the highest level of personnel efficiency, however in order to meet the demands of the community the proposed

budget allows for the hire of three additional sworn police officers, three additional firefighters, and eight civilian employees. Additionally, in an effort to stay competitive for top talent, the City has allocated a portion of the general fund to provide a 5% increase in compensation for all City employees. Aside

And investment in trails and pathways throughout the City continues to be a priority for the City’s infrastructure budget.
