MAYOR’S LETTER Earlier this year in my State of the City address, I spoke of the importance of creating community traditions and the ways our Parks Department is working to create events that the entire community can enjoy. One of our longstanding community traditions takes place this month, the Fishers Freedom Festival presented by Freedom Mortgage® on June 27 and 28. The festival offers fun activities and events for the whole family all weekend. Our Summer Concert Series, which has been enjoyed by residents for the last several years, gets its start this month with the weekly Tuesday Night Concert Series and AMP After Dark on Friday nights. The Nickel Plate Players is also bringing a new original show to the amphitheater stage later this month, which you’ll learn more about in this issue. As summer gets its start and the days last longer and nights grow warmer, we hope that you’ll take advantage of all of the community events we have to offer in the Nickel Plate District and throughout the city from Parks and Recreation events to summer concerts to arts events and more. Stay updated on all the summer’s happenings by downloading the Nickel Plate District app. It’s free and available for downloading in the iTunes and Google Play stores. You’ll also receive special discounts from Nickel Plate District businesses. A big community feels small when you get involved. I hope to see you out and about this month.

Yours in service, Mayor Scott Fadness

Nickel Plate Players presents a New Jukebox Musical

debuts at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater on June 20 Girls Night Out, presented by the Nickel Plate Players, is a brand new jukebox musical about the greatest female singers of all time. Girls Night Out follows a group of girlfriends navigating their way through various stages of their lives; the ups and downs, highs and lows, good times and bad. From clubs and restaurants to concert halls and theatres and every emotion in between, the musical interests of the girlfriends change and revolve around the circumstances of their lives. The production features rock and country, R&B and hip hop, soul and jazz, swing and standards and even disco and some Broadway show tunes. The show will feature a seven-piece band. Girls Night Out is co-authored by Fishers resident Ashton Wolf and Minneapolis native Daina DePrez. Girls Night Out is the second endeavor of the writing duo; they brought the world premiere of their all-original musical, TEN PIN ALLI, to Indianapolis in 2013. Girls Night Out is the second production of the Nickel Plate Players in Fishers. Beehive, the first musical theatre production to grace the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater stage, garnered the Nickel Plate Players a 2014 Award of Excellence from the state of Indiana and drew nearly 2,000 attendees. Girls Night Out is a family-friendly production and all are invited; admission is free. For more information on the Nickel Plate Players and Girls Night Out, visit www.nickelplateplayers.com 4

#EngageFishers with @FishersDan

By Dan Domsic

On April 18, more than 360 volunteers worked to Keep Fishers Beautiful. These volunteers helped community members spruce up their homes. These volunteers lent a hand at two of the city’s parks. These volunteers weeded out invasive plants at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve. These volunteers helped out at the Recycling Day event that brought 900 cars to Mudsock Fields. Looking at how this event has grown in a short amount of time, I can’t help but be excited for the different ways in which Keep Fishers Beautiful can evolve and better serve the community. One doesn’t have to look far to see amazing things being done by volunteer muscle. Indianapolis (and the Rotary Club of Indianapolis) has Indy Do Day, multiple churches have individual days of service, and many organizations seek ways to contribute to the communities they operate in.

Check it out:

Visit the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater Facebook page for information on this summer’s events. The various concert series have been announced, and include Jennie DeVoe on July 10 and Eddie Money on July 24.

I would love to see the Keep Fishers Beautiful initiative bring out even more volunteers in the future and make an even bigger impact. In the past, we’ve seen Geist Lake cleanups and volunteers in the right-of-ways alongside various thoroughfares in Fishers. What would you like to see volunteers band together to accomplish in 2016? Do you think there’s a particular public area that could use the focus from community members working together? On behalf of the Keep Fishers Beautiful team, thank you to everyone that came out and made the initiative happen, and thank you to the many sponsors that helped keep costs down and show appreciation for the volunteers. I can’t wait to see what we all accomplish together as Keep Fishers Beautiful continues to grow.

The Nickel Plate Players also return to the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater stage (6 Municipal Drive) on June 20 at 8 p.m. Last year’s premiere performance of “Beehive” was a big draw. This time they’ll be bringing a new musical, “Girls Night Out,” to life. Expect rock, country, R&B and hip hop, and even more kinds of tunes from the show.

Fishers Freedom Festival presented by Freedom Mortgage® Returns June 27-28 5K Walk/Run & Two Mile Family Walk

In 1989, a Fishers community tradition began when founders of the Fishers Parade and Festival decided to have a community gathering to celebrate Independence Day. With the help of volunteers, the event began as a one-day community picnic and parade with a few games for children. After overwhelming participation by the public, this event grew to a two-day event. Now, the festival boasts more than 50,000 attendees annually and includes 130 juried fine arts and crafts sites, 80 business booths, 30 food vendors and 20 free games booths. The mission of the Fishers Freedom Festival is to encourage fellowship through civic partnerships and citizen involvement by creating a safe environment, developing needed community services, promoting family integrity and striving to improve the quality of life for every resident by investing in human potential. Even though admission is free, the Festival strongly encourages attendees to bring donations of nonperishable food items, cleaning supplies, baby items, clothing, toys, books and/or toiletries for admittance. Multiple drop-off locations are located throughout Holland Park and will be collected by Boy Scouts of America Troops walking in Sunday’s Main Parade. Items will go to the food drive and school supply drive to benefit those locally in need. Keep reading to learn about the many activities this year’s Fishers Freedom Festival presented by Freedom Mortgage® has to offer.

The Switch

Purdue Brings Two Programs to the Nickel Plate District Two Purdue University programs have committed to calling the Nickel Plate District home. The Purdue University College of Pharmacy’s Center for Medication Safety Advancement (CMSA) and Purdue Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) have signed on to occupy the second floor of The Switch on Municipal Drive. One of the keys for Purdue’s move to Fishers was the transformation of the Nickel Plate District into an economic development catalyst with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. “The Nickel Plate District was designed to attract innovative organizations and a talented workforce. Purdue’s commitment to The Switch is a testament to the latest market-driven project in the area and we are thrilled to welcome them to Fishers,” said Mayor Scott Fadness.

The mission of the Purdue University College of Pharmacy’s Center for Medication Safety Advancement is to make safe medication use common practice. CMSA strives to discover new practices and engage the community to spread the adoption of safe medication use practices. “Throughout our existence, partnerships have been essential to the work we do. Identifying with others who share our common values and vision for making healthcare as safe as possible is central to our success. The entrepreneurial spirit in Fishers will place us amongst innovative thought

leaders working towards discovering new safe solutions to problems that continue to plague us in delivering healthcare in a consistent and safe manner,” said Kyle Hultgren, Director CMSA.

The Purdue MEP Center recently announced a significant boost to its funding that will quadruple the Center’s federal funding, allowing it to eventually serve over 400 manufacturers. The organization projects its employment growth will easily double in the next two years as a result of this expanded mission. “During our search for a space and community to accommodate our growth, it was apparent the City of Fishers offered an exceptional location that satisfied our field office logistical needs, our desired work life environment, and a cost competitive lease. We are pleased to bring our central office into the Nickel Plate District redevelopment, and look forward to serving our state’s manufacturing base with Fishers as our hub location,” said Dave Snow, Director, Purdue MEP Center. Purdue plans to move into the new space in August of this year.
