Foreword

The Final Year Projects of the Associate of Arts in English for Professional Communication (專業英語傳意副文學士) and the Associate of Arts in Communication and Public Relations (傳意及公共關係副文學士) are the crowning activity of many hours of student study, research, discussion and planning. The Projects bring together all the skills and knowledge that students of the Division of Languages and Communication have acquired over their two years with CCCU (the Community College of City University).

AAEPC FYP

This is now the second year for the AAEPC Final Year Project in its new approach - an individual project. On the basis of last year’s successful transition from group project to individual project, I am confident that we shall see the same inspired range of topics. In its new format the FYP provides a more focused and challenging preparation for further studies for which the ability to carry out research work and apply the appropriate academic skills is a must.

AAC&PR FYP

To give good hands-on experience of managing communication in a team, an important part of preparation for the workplace, and in the marketing-oriented, promotion-heavy PR field, students in the AACPR programme undertake a group FYP project. This requires close liaison with the external host organizations and, as you will see, the range of projects is impressive and gives students free rein to express their creativity while managing the requirements of the promotional exercise.

Foreword

THANK YOUs

I would like to thank in particular the host organizations of the various AACPR projects who have demonstrated their confidence in the skills of our students by entrusting them with the job of carrying out a real-life promotional activity. Thanks are also due to our assessors for both the AAEPC and AACPR Final Year Projects. We are very grateful to them for the time and effort they have devoted to this activity and for bringing to bear on the project work they are assessing the professional scrutiny which ensures that our standards remain benchmarked against external criteria. Their support is greatly appreciated. My teaching colleagues have contributed their professional advice and guidance to our Year 2 students as they balance the requirements of the project (with all the demands it makes on their time and effort) against the ongoing demands of all their other courses, whether in their specialized core courses or in generic skills courses or in the mind-broadening general education courses all students now take as part of their education at CCCU. As usual, everyone has benefited from the support given by our ever-helpful colleagues in the Divisional General Office. Thank you to you all.

Duncan Hunter Head, Division of Languages and Communication

Foreword

Welcome to the AAEPC-AAC&PR Project Exhibition! The posters that you see presented here are the products of research by AAEPC students. As long ago as last summer, students started working on their research projects. By the beginning of semester A, they had decided on their topic and by the end of the semester, they had produced a proposal. Apart from these posters, they also produce an oral presentation and an academic report. This year, unlike last year, the AAEPC students will be standing by their posters for some of the time so you will have an opportunity to ask them questions. The project exhibition is an opportunity to showcase what our AAEPC students have learnt on the programme, from thinking about English language usage in its various forms to appreciating the different aspects of communication in a broader sense. The project is a culmination of the range of courses from which students learn advanced language skills, professional writing, design and communication skills, research techniques and critical thinking skills. By the end of the two year AAEPC programme, all students are now able to demonstrate that they can conduct academic research, a skill that puts them in good stead when applying for bachelors degree programmes. We hope you enjoy the exhibition.

Kevin Forde Programme Leader, AAEPC

Foreword

Thank you very much for coming and supporting the Year 2 AAC&PR students at this Exhibition. Your interest in their projects is most appreciated since the students have worked very hard on these projects, and their presentation of them, since September 2012. Much of the effort put forth during this academic year can be seen in these Final Year Project Booths. Each booth has three panels in which to describe both the project process as well as outcome. This Exhibition is an opportunity for the students to show how they carried out an authentic community-based project, evaluated its effectiveness and met their project objectives. It also provides them with an opportunity to visually depict the project using some formidable design skills. However, there is plenty that a walk around these booths might not clearly show including all of the preliminary brainstorming and discussion coming up with an idea for a project including identifying a host organization and securing sponsors. Work such as preparing proposals, executing Agreements, writing Minutes of meetings and submitting Thank You letters are not in evidence. The negotiation for venues, the handling of contributions, the contingency plans and the struggle to transport and store materials are not in evidence. These projects were immensely time-consuming and challenged the students’ communication skills at every turn. The gain in confidence and the ability to handle setbacks has been remarkable. Please enjoy this Exhibition. I would like to encourage you to talk with the students and ask them about their resilience in starting with nothing but their dreams and hopes and ending with these most impressive projects that you see here. Mary Tabarsi Tsang Programme Leader, AAC&PR

Students’ Reflections

AAEPC It is not a chance for me to show my skills only. It is a way to develop my creativity in designing world. To cope with different people from various fields, I am encouraged by their ideas and efforts. Thus, I enjoy it!

---Cecilia CHENG

“It is my honor to participate in arranging my classmates’ hardworks to public. The works show not just our academic effort but also are representations of support that we have given to each other. At last, I would like to thank for our supervisors and all other members who have partcipated in the exhibition.” ---Erica TANG What a chance! I am glad that I be the FYP Exhibition Committee and work together with our friends in C&PR. I would like to thanks Cicy for giving me the opportunity to take a blast! After all, I hope our effort can impress our visitors. Final Year Project is not an easy task, your support is the biggest support ever.

---Jason TSANG

AAC&PR “It is my pleasure helping in the FYP exhibition this year. It gave me an unforgettable experience in my school life. I hope everyone will enjoy the two days exhibition withour effort!

---Betty CHU

“The Final Year Project provides us a valuable opportunity to cooperate with the local organizations. It is not merely a project for us, but also is the chance to act as a real PR! Moreover, we are also responsible for the preparation work of project exhibition to present our achievements. It would definitely become our unforgettable memories!!” ---Fish FUNG “Working with students from EPC and C&PR in designing promotion materials and setting up the exhibition is a great experience for me definitely. Hopefully, all the materials that produced including this booklet can bring back those pleasant memories during the time we were getting along with each other.” ---Renee HA “For me, I believe that it is a rural chance for us to take more responsibility to practice what we have leant from the courses. Although we were not very sophisticated in handling the challenges but all of us tried our best to overcome them. Finally, our PR campaign was very successful.” ---Zoey CHAN
